Dr. Ronald L. Jackson II (BA, University of Cincinnati; MA, University of Cincinnati; Ph.D., Howard University) is a professor jointly appointed in the Department of Communication Studies and Department of Journalism and Media Management.
He is Past President of the National Communication Association and the Eastern Communication Association, and past editor of Critical Studies in Media Communication. In 2021 Dr. Jackson was inducted as an International Communication Association Fellow and in 2020 as a National Communication Association Distinguished Scholar. Dr. Jackson was University of Cincinnati’s s first African American Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. After his tenure as Dean he was elected President of the National Communication Association, and subsequently appointed a Distinguished Visiting Professor at University of Graz (Austria).
Dr. Jackson has previously held faculty appointments at Penn State University, University of Illinois, and was Distinguished University Research Professor at University of Cincinnati prior to joining the School of Communication faculty at University of Miami.
Dr. J, as students affectionately know him, is an award-winning author of 17 books and 85 publications related to the study of masculinity, identity negotiation, race, and culture. His most popular books include Scripting the Black Masculine Body, African American Communication & Identity, Interpreting Tyler Perry, Gladiators in Suits: Race, Gender, and the Politics of Representation in Scandal, Encyclopedia of Identity, and the International Comic-con Will Eisner award winning book Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation
It might also be interesting to know that, besides his consulting firm Cinspire Consulting & Coaching, specializing in leadership and change management, his company Legacy Genius produces cultural trivia games used in the Cincinnati Public Schools. His two signature games are titled Black History Trivia Showdown and Cultural Excellence: Latino and Black History Trivia Edition.
