The first National Intercollegiate Debate Rankings for 2013 have been posted, and The University of Miami Debate Team is ranked among the nation’s elite. In the National Debate Tournament (NDT) rankings, UM placed 11th (of 115 member schools), and the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) rankings place UM at #12. UM is second in the Southeast Region to Wake Forest, who is ranked 6th by the NDT and 5th by CEDA.
School of Communication seniors Monica Zgurova and Morgan Chicchelly have been awarded $1,750 scholarships by the Ev Clay/PRSA Miami Chapter Endowment Fund.
The scholarships were established in 1985 in memory of Miami public relations pioneer Everett A. Clay. The fund supports excellence in the PR profession by awarding scholarships to outstanding students of public relations.
Ashley Park and Barbara Puodzius, members of the University of Miami Debate team, won the novice championship at the Georgia State University National College Debate Tournament held in Atlanta on September 21-23.
The team is sponsored by the School of Communication and coached by David Steinberg, a senior lecturer at the SoC and the university’s director of debate.
A group of exceptional students from the School of Communication are the recipients of a 2013 Wine Spectator Foundation Scholarship. The Wine Spectator Foundation Scholarship is an annual scholarship that awards $50,000 a year to deserving students studying communication at the University of Miami.
A number of bright and talented students can be found at The School of Communication. Each year, the SoC names a group of outstanding seniors who have achieved academic excellence during their time at the University of Miami.
Brooke LeMaire was named the 2013 Outstanding Senior in Public Relations, the school’s most popular major.
