Department of Cinematic Arts Rises to No. 11 in TheWrap’s Top 50 Film Schools List

In a remarkable leap forward, the University of Miami has been ranked No. 11 in the 2024 edition of TheWrap’s Top 50 U.S. Film Schools list, climbing from its previous position of No. 21 in 2023. This recognition by TheWrap, a respected publication in the entertainment industry, highlights UM’s dedication to cinematic excellence and educational innovation.

Now in its ninth year, TheWrap’s Top 50 list partnered for the first time with the entertainment industry research firm Screen Engine/ASI, applying a more data-focused approach to ranking film schools. This year’s rigorous evaluation process involved a detailed survey that assessed each school’s strengths in a wide range of areas, resulting in a reshuffle of top spots in the list.

TheWrap highlighted the Department of Cinematic Arts’s commitment to continually evolve to meet industry demands and adapt to new media technologies. With new programs like the M.F.A. in Documentary and a TV writing track, along with a transmedia module for cross-platform storytelling, UM is preparing students for a digital-first landscape. A 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio and interdisciplinary approach provide both technical skills and cultural insights. Financially, 85% of students receive aid, covering about half of tuition. TheWrap also noted that UM’s comprehensive curriculum, competitive facilities, and dedicated faculty make it a top choice for aspiring media professionals.

“We are overjoyed to see TheWrap recognize what we already knew—that the University of Miami is one of the premier destinations for the art and study of media making,” said Dr. Alfred Martin, associate professor and chair of the Department of Cinematic Arts. “The rise in our ranking is the result of our hardworking faculty who remain active producing award-winning work that gives them valuable insights about contemporary media practices and the study of media to pass along to the next generation of storytellers.”

This achievement was also met with enthusiasm from Dr. Karin Wilkins, dean of the School of Communication, who commented, “It’s a wrap! We welcome TheWrap’s recognition of our creative excellence. Cheers to our amazing Cinematic Arts faculty, staff, students, and alumni, telling the stories that matter, and telling them so well. I am so proud of our creative community.”

As the University of Miami reaches new heights in TheWrap’s 2024 film school rankings, the Department of Cinematic Arts stands out as a hub of creativity, innovation, and academic excellence. With a commitment to providing innovative programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and strong faculty support, the university is solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for media and film studies.
