Asst. Professor
Ayleen Cabas-Mijares (PhD, Journalism, University of Missouri) is an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Miami. Her scholarly work examines the impact of minoritized epistemologies and practices on journalism and media to evaluate how those influences could better support the liberatory potential of these institutions. She situates most of her research in the Latin American and Latinx contexts. Dr. Cabas-Mijares deploys qualitative methodologies in most of her studies and contributes to literature in critical/cultural studies, social movements studies, journalism studies, and transnational feminist and queer theories.
Dr. Cabas-Mijares’ research has been published in top-tier journals, such as Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly (JMCQ), Journalism, Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, Media & Communication, Communication, Culture & Critique, and Feminist Media Studies. She has also earned multiple top faculty paper awards at the annual conventions of both the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and the International Communication Association (ICA). Dr. Cabas-Mijares is currently the vice head of AEJMC’s Cultural and Critical Studies Division.
