International Applicant Process

English Proficiency Requirement

Academic success at the University of Miami depends on one’s ability to communicate effectively in English. To prove language proficiency, applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Duolingo English Test (DET). Please expand each option below to learn more about the minimum score required and how to send the official results. Test scores are NOT considered official if provided by, or received via the applicant.

International students who have received a college degree from a U.S. institution are exempt from taking TOEFL, IELTS, or DET. International students whose first language is English may be exempt from taking the test. Studying English at a U.S. institution is not necessarily sufficient to waive the English Proficiency requirement.

Applicants holding an undergraduate or graduate degree from an academic institution within the United States or one of the following English-speaking countries are not required to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or DET examinations:

International Credentialing Evaluation Process

Students must submit a copy of their diploma with English translation for degrees earned outside of the United States. Official/original transcripts must be translated to English if not already in English.

Domestic or international applicants that have attended (or have academic credits from) an international institution must have any educational credentials earned outside the United States verified by an approved international credentialing evaluation service. Applicants are encouraged to submit an international transcript evaluation along with their transcripts from one of the approved University of Miami vendors found on this list.

If you do not already have an international transcript evaluation, the Office of Graduate Studies will obtain it. The international credentialing evaluation service can take several weeks. We strongly encourage international students to apply and submit all transcripts early for timely decision-making.

Copy of Passport

International students must submit a copy of their passport.
