You have found the website of the University of Miami School of Communications High School New Journalism/New Media Summer Workshop. This site offers information about the workshop held each summer at our Coral Gables campus for students in the underserved areas of South Florida.

The program is held in mid or late June of each year.

Individuals interested in the program should contact Workshop Director Tsitsi Wakhisi for additional information.

Workshop sessions take place in the new School of Communications International Building, which opened in January of 2007, and the Wolfson Building. Students are given secure, supervised residential college (dormitory) rooms for the three-week session on campus.

The workshop is made possible by the generous gift of James Ansin, vice president and station manager for WSVN – Channel 7, and Peace Sullivan, now a philanthropist and a retired journalist and psychoanalyst.  Other funding partners include the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the School of Communications and the South Florida media operations.  It is hosted by the Journalism Program and the School of Communications.

The workshop has been held annually since 1984 and has recently expanded into an all media workshop, embracing print and electronic journalism.  At the end of the session, the participants will have developed the content for a tabloid newspaper-Miami Montage, a website and broadcast material to complete the publication.

The workshop utilizes facilities of the university, UM's Miami News Service, the Journalism and Photography Program, and The Miami Herald.

The 2004 edition of Miami Montage (pdf) , the workshop newspaper, is available online. Earlier editions of Miami Montage, produced by students in 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997, and 1996, are also available at the workshop's Web site.

Visitors will find information about the program, staff, participants, and the workshop newspaper. Use the index links to the left to find specific content on this site.
