The Motion Picture program offers a complete curricular experience in critical understanding and effective creation of contemporary moving image media. Its innovative curriculum embraces the creative process from development and writing through production and post-production to all forms of media exhibition, and complements it with a strong grounding in film criticism, aesthetics of the moving image, and international history of cinema.

Facilities in the Motion Picture program include the Bill Cosford Cinema, a state-of-the-art theater that exhibits first-run alternative, foreign and classic films; a complete array of film and digital cameras and related grip and electric equipment; a soundstage; all digital post-production image and sound facilities; and digital animation.

The Canes Film Festival of UM undergraduate and graduate films is held every year on campus with a professional showcase screening in Los Angeles. The program-supported student organization UFILM Studios, promotes filmmaking literacy and professional independence.

The Norton Herrick Center for Motion Picture Studies possesses a collection of over 3000 films and television programs including many rare and otherwise unavailable titles.
