An assessment of the "cord-cutting" trends in the video business, a survey examining relationships between Facebook use and sleep patterns, and an analysis of music streaming and piracy were the topics of the three winning entries of this year's Media Management Association (MMA) Awards.
For its last meeting of the academic year, the Media Management Association invited four faculty from the Department of Journalism and Media Management with considerable professional experience to offer advice to graduating seniors about their first job applications and interviews. The participating faculty were Professors Andrew Barton, Ana François, Sam Terilli, and Boriana Treadwell; they represented all areas of study in the department.
On Wednesday, March 29, the Media Management Association welcomed Laura Berga, director of Strategy and Programming Analysis for HBO Latin America Group (LAG). Berga is a University of Miami alumna who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Advertising and Graphic Design. After beginning a career in advertising, she later returned to UM to complete an M.B.A. with a specialization in marketing and finance.
Last Wednesday, the Media Management Association invited ESPN’s David Bearman, manager of production research, and Tiffany Doolittle, manager of business operations, to explain the purpose and functions of Bristol, CT-based ESPN's Statistics and Information. This division specializes in sports data and analytical storytelling and disseminates content across ESPN’s television, radio, digital, mobile, and magazine platforms.
On Wednesday, February 15, Dean Lyon, founder and CEO of Splinter Studios, discussed the past, present, and future state of visual effects (VFX) and computer graphics in motion picture and television production with members of the Media Management Association. Lyon is best known for his work as visual effects supervisor on The Lord of the Rings franchise.
On Wednesday, November 30, Lynn Carrillo, Vice President, Legal, NBCUniversal News Group and University of Miami School of Law graduate, spoke to members of the Media Management Association about the role of sexual harassment in the modern workplace, especially within the media industry. She is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Management.
