Project Description

Homestead-Miami Speedway hosted the 2013 NASCAR Ford Championship Weekend in November. The University of Miami PREP students and managers played a key role in the weekend’s events and worked Wednesday, Nov. 13 through Sunday, Nov. 17. In order to prepare for the event, students attended a NASCAR 101 Training to learn more about motorsports, the venue and the event in general.

UM PREP students ran media operations in three locations throughout the venue and assisted with all of the credentialing for the track. Some students were assigned to work with the credentials office, making sure the necessary credentials were handed out to the media, teams, guests and VIPs. Students were also assigned to work in the media center assisting with press conferences, document distribution and managing media work areas off victory lane and in the press box.

During NASCAR Championship weekend, PREP students fill shifts from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and have more than 20 students working at any given time. In addition to the assistance offered to the press, students also worked in pairs to take pictures and write posts for social media platforms and a few students had the opportunity to write feature stories for the HMS site and press releases for national distribution.
