SUMMARY:Global Frontiers Screening Series: 'A Life On Our Planet'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our third installment in a new breakthrough monthly film series at the Cosford Cinema focusing on current world issues such as migration and social inclusion\, peace and security\, aging populations\, democracy\, climate change\, and artificial intelligence. \nEach screening will be preceded by a wide-ranging\, multi-media conversation between Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez and a special guest. \nThe series continues on Saturday\, Feb. 4\, at 2 p.m.\, with “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet” (2020)\, a visually stunning but terrifying documentary about the crises that threaten the survival of Earth: deforestation\, global warming\, pollution\, and other issues plaguing our planet. \nThe 97-year-old Sir David Frederick Attenborough\, brother of the Oscar-winning director Richard Attenborough\, has devoted much of his adult life exploring the natural wonders of our planet and advocating for ecological causes such as reducing meat consumption and switching to renewable energy. \nHe has earned 32 honorary degrees from British universities. At least 20 species of plants and arthropods are named after him. In 2022\, he was recognized as a Champion of the Earth by the United Nations Environment Program. \nThe screening will be preceded by a 20-minute discussion between Rodriguez and Jennifer Jacquet\, visiting professor of global climate change at the University of Miami. The conversation will focus on anthropogenic climate change\, its accompanying psychological barriers and the need for social approval in generating cooperation. The discussion will include clips from other movies exploring similar subject matter. \nAdmission is free but registration is required at link.

SUMMARY:The Sight & Sound Top Ten: 'Vertigo' (1958)
DESCRIPTION:The Cosford Cinema is proud to present a screening series of the top 10 films of the 2022 Sight & Sound Top 100 Poll: The Greatest Films of All Time. \nLaunched in 1952 and conducted every 10 years since\, the poll includes filmmakers\, critics and journalists from around the world. The results are published in Sight & Sound\, a monthly film magazine published by the British Film Institute. \nVERTIGO | YEAR: 1958 | DIRECTOR: Alfred Hitchcock | 4K Digital projection | RUNNING TIME: 128 minutes | RATED: PG (for adult themes) \nAn ex-police officer (James Stewart) who suffers from an intense fear of heights is hired to prevent an old friend’s wife (Kim Novak) from committing suicide\, but all is not as it seems. Hitchcock’s haunting\, compelling masterpiece is uniquely revelatory about the director’s own predilections and hang-ups and is widely considered to be one of his masterworks. \n“Vertigo” took the number two spot in the Sight & Sound poll. Admission is $5 per film or $40 for a series pass. Students with Cane card use code UMSTUDENT at checkout for free admission. Tickets available at link. \n“One of the two or three best films Hitchcock ever made\, ‘Vertigo’ is the most confessional\, dealing directly with the themes that controlled his art. It is *about* how Hitchcock used\, feared and tried to control women. He is represented by Scottie (James Stewart)\, a man with physical and mental weaknesses (back problems\, fear of heights)\, who falls obsessively in love with the image of a woman–and not any woman\, but the quintessential Hitchcock woman. \n“When he cannot have her\, he finds another woman and tries to mold her\, dress her\, train her\, change her makeup and her hair\, until she looks like the woman he desires. He cares nothing about the clay he is shaping; he will gladly sacrifice her on the altar of his dreams.” – Roger Ebert

SUMMARY:Echoing Josephine Baker: 'Touki Bouki' by Djibril Diop Mambéty
DESCRIPTION:FILM + CONVERSATION EVENT \nWith a stunning mix of the surreal and the naturalistic\, Djibril Diop Mambéty paints a vivid\, fractured portrait of Senegal in the early 1970s. In this French New Wave–influenced fantasy-drama\, two young lovers long to leave Dakar for the glamour and comforts of France\, but their escape plan is beset by complications both concrete and mystical. Characterized by dazzling imagery and music\, the alternately manic and meditative “Touki Bouki” is widely considered one of the most important African films ever made. Introduction by Dr. Patoimbasba Nikiema\, assistant professor of French and Francophone Studies / Global Black and Afropean Studies.

SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Mitch Kaplan: 'Days Of Heaven' (1978)
DESCRIPTION:Join Books & Books founder Mitchell Kaplan and Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez for a screening and Q&A discussion of Terrence Malick’s Oscar-winning 1978 drama “Days of Heaven.” \nMiami Beach native\, Mitchell Kaplan\, opened the first Books & Books in 1982 in Coral Gables\, Florida. Now with five South Florida locations\, Books & Books hosts over 400 events per year. In addition\, two of the stores are home to well-established cafes and there are Books & Books affiliated stores at the Miami International Airport\, and in Key West\, where he collaborates with the noted author Judy Blume and her husband\, George. \nAmong his honors\, Kaplan served as president of the American Booksellers Association and he received the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation. Books & Books was also Publishers Weekly’s bookstore of the year. He recently accepted an appointment to serve on the Board of the National Coalition Against Censorship. \nAs co-founder of the Miami Book Fair in 1985\, Kaplan has served as the chairperson of its Board of Directors and continues to guide the programming team at the Fair which takes place on the campus of Miami-Dade College in the heart of downtown Miami. Each year\, the Fair presents close to 500 authors over one week in November\, along with a street festival\, where bookstalls line the streets adjacent to the campus. Programs take place in Creole\, Spanish\, and English\, reflecting the diversity of Miami. \nKaplan\, with his partner Paula Mazur\, established The Mazur Kaplan Company to bring books to the screen\, both film and television. His most recent release is “Let Him Go” starring Diane Lane and Kevin Costner. Kaplan also hosts the podcast “The Literary Life with Mitchell Kaplan\,” broadcast from Miami\, where he lives with his wife\, Rachelle. They have three children\, Anya\, Daniel\, and Jonah. \nDAYS OF HEAVEN | DIRECTED BY: Terrence Malick | USA | 1978 | 1H 34M | RATED PG | STARRING: Richard Gere\, Brooke Adams\, Sam Shepard\, andLinda Manz | 4K digital projection \nOne-of-a-kind filmmaker-philosopher Terrence Malick has created some of the most visually arresting films of the 20th century\, and his glorious period tragedy “Days of Heaven\,” featuring Oscar-winning cinematography by Nestor Almendros\, stands out among them. \nIn 1910\, a Chicago steelworker (Richard Gere) accidentally kills his supervisor\, and he\, his girlfriend (Brooke Adams)\, and his little sister (Linda Manz) flee to the Texas panhandle\, where they find work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer (Sam Shepard). \nA love triangle\, a swarm of locusts\, a hellish fire—Malick captures it all with dreamlike authenticity\, creating a timeless American idyll that is also a gritty evocation of turn-of-the-century labor. \nAdmission is FREE\, but registration required at link\, https://events.miami.edu/event/watching_movies_with_mitch_kaplan_days_of_heaven_1978. \n“‘Days of Heaven’ is above all one of the most beautiful films ever made. Malick’s purpose is not to tell a story of melodrama\, but one of loss. His tone is elegiac. He evokes the loneliness and beauty of the limitless Texas prairie. In the first hour of the film there is scarcely a scene set indoors. The farm workers camp under the stars and work in the fields\, and even the farmer is so besotted by the weather that he tinkers with wind instruments on the roof of his Gothic mansion. \n[The movie] has been criticized for its muted emotions: Although passions erupt in a deadly love triangle\, all the feelings are somehow held at arm’s length. This observation is true enough\, if you think only about the actions of the adults in the story. But watching this film again recently\, I was struck more than ever with the conviction that this is the story of a teenage girl\, told by her\, and its subject is the way that hope and cheer have been beaten down in her heart. \nWe do not feel the full passion of the adults because it is not her passion: It is seen at a distance\, as a phenomenon\, like the weather\, or the plague of grasshoppers that signals the beginning of the end.” — Roger Ebert

SUMMARY:The Sight & Sound Top Ten: 'Tokyo Story' (1953)
DESCRIPTION:The Cosford Cinema is proud to present a screening series of the top 10 films of the 2022 Sight & Sound Top 100 Poll: The Greatest Films of All Time. \nLaunched in 1952 and conducted every 10 years since\, the poll includes filmmakers\, critics\, and journalists from around the world. The results are published in “Sight & Sound\,” a monthly film magazine published by the British Film Institute. \nTOKYO STORY | YEAR: 1953 | DIRECTOR: Yasujirô Ozu | 4K DCP projection | RUNNING TIME: 136 minutes | UNRATED (no offensive material) | In Japanese with English subtitles. \nA profoundly stirring evocation of elemental humanity and universal heartbreak\, “Tokyo Story” is the crowning achievement of the unparalleled Yasujiro Ozu. The film\, which follows an aging couple’s journey to visit their grown children in bustling postwar Tokyo\, surveys the rich and complex world of family life with the director’s customary delicacy and incisive perspective on social mores. \nFeaturing lovely performances from Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara\, “Tokyo Story” plumbs and deepens the director’s recurring theme of generational conflict\, creating what is without question one of cinema’s mightiest masterpieces. \n“Tokyo Story” took the fourth spot in the Sight & Sound poll. Admission is $5 per film or $40 for a series pass. Students with Cane card use code UMSTUDENTS at checkout for free admission. Tickets available via https://events.miami.edu/event/the_sight_sound_top_ten_tokyo_story_1953. \n“‘Tokyo Story’ has frequently been acclaimed by filmmakers and critics alike as the greatest film ever made\, and it very arguably could be. Regardless of where you’d place it on the hierarchy of the “best evers\,” ‘Tokyo Story’ is certainly the ultimate family film—that is\, the ultimate film about family and what family actually means. \nIt is\, of course\, about a family\, observing three generations in a single unit to analyze the vast differences that separate them. In movies like ‘Late Spring’ and ‘Early Summer\,’ Ozu looks at the changing face of Japanese culture in the 1950s\, when a younger generation challenged and defied traditions that were pivotal to older generations. \nIn ‘Tokyo Story’ he places a lot of value on family\, but one that doesn’t necessarily place judgment upon those who abide by the inevitability of change. Each generation has its own set of cultural rules that they follow\, without a single generation being right or wrong. It’s much more complicated than that\, and Ozu tells the audience that family is just that: complicated.” — Adam Grinwald\, “Collider”

SUMMARY:The Sight & Sound Top Ten: ‘In The Mood For Love’ (2000)
DESCRIPTION:The Cosford Cinema is proud to present a screening series of the top 10 films of the 2022 Sight & Sound Top 100 Poll: The Greatest Films of All Time. \nLaunched in 1952 and conducted every 10 years since\, the poll includes filmmakers\, critics\, and journalists from around the world. The results are published in “Sight & Sound\,” a monthly film magazine published by the British Film Institute. \n“IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE” | YEAR: 2000 | DIRECTOR: Wong Kar Wai | 4K DCP | RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes | RATED: PG (for adult themes) \nHong Kong\, 1962: Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and Su Li-Zhen (Maggie Cheung Man Yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite—until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. \nAt once delicately mannered and visually extravagant\, Wong Kar Wai’s “In the Mood for Love” is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping Bing\, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past two decades of cinema\, and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career. \n“In the Mood for Love” took fifth place in the Sight & Sound poll. Admission is $5. Students with Cane card use code UMSTUDENT at checkout for free admission.
