DESCRIPTION:As we watch incredible advances in artificial intelligence and robotics\, machines get smarter and stronger every day. \nSome say robots will take everyone’s jobs and we are doomed to live under harsh circumstances\, but the reality is that humans are needed more than ever\, and this is an opportunity for a “Human Renascence.” \nWhy not allow machines to do what they do better and further develop our human skills? Critical thinking\, creativity\, negotiation\, emotional intelligence\, and love cannot be developed by machines as humans do\, yet those skills are fundamental in the construction of our future and in the design of robots. \nIn this lecture\, Alberto Levy Macedo will talk about how we are educated to be robots\, and will discuss about jobs\, ethics in AI\, and how to combine technology and humanity for a better future. \nThis event takes place at the Richter Library – 102B Learning Commons Flexible Program Space.

SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Mitch Kaplan: 'Days Of Heaven' (1978)
DESCRIPTION:Join Books & Books founder Mitchell Kaplan and Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez for a screening and Q&A discussion of Terrence Malick’s Oscar-winning 1978 drama “Days of Heaven.” \nMiami Beach native\, Mitchell Kaplan\, opened the first Books & Books in 1982 in Coral Gables\, Florida. Now with five South Florida locations\, Books & Books hosts over 400 events per year. In addition\, two of the stores are home to well-established cafes and there are Books & Books affiliated stores at the Miami International Airport\, and in Key West\, where he collaborates with the noted author Judy Blume and her husband\, George. \nAmong his honors\, Kaplan served as president of the American Booksellers Association and he received the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation. Books & Books was also Publishers Weekly’s bookstore of the year. He recently accepted an appointment to serve on the Board of the National Coalition Against Censorship. \nAs co-founder of the Miami Book Fair in 1985\, Kaplan has served as the chairperson of its Board of Directors and continues to guide the programming team at the Fair which takes place on the campus of Miami-Dade College in the heart of downtown Miami. Each year\, the Fair presents close to 500 authors over one week in November\, along with a street festival\, where bookstalls line the streets adjacent to the campus. Programs take place in Creole\, Spanish\, and English\, reflecting the diversity of Miami. \nKaplan\, with his partner Paula Mazur\, established The Mazur Kaplan Company to bring books to the screen\, both film and television. His most recent release is “Let Him Go” starring Diane Lane and Kevin Costner. Kaplan also hosts the podcast “The Literary Life with Mitchell Kaplan\,” broadcast from Miami\, where he lives with his wife\, Rachelle. That’s the best way to describe Shannon High-Bassalik’s career which has spanned news\, entertainment\, documentaries\, streaming\, and social media. Starting as an associate news producer in Miami at WFOR\, she came back to the station exactly 10 years later as VP of news and helped bring it from one of the worst stations in the country to an award-winning national leader. \nAt the networks\, as creator and executive producer of CNN’s “Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien” and “Early Start\,” she helped increase ratings by 20% year over year. As VP and managing editor of MSNBC\, overseeing the content and programming of mornings\, daytime\, and weekends\, she built a team that increased ratings to the highest they had ever been\, and as SVP of programming for the short-lived Al Jazeera America network\, she oversaw primetime shows and documentaries\, including teams that won Primetime Emmys\, Peabodys and Duponts. \nAlways on the hunt to learn new genres\, she has worked in the entertainment industry as co-executive producer of the nationally syndicated daytime talk show “Tamron Hall” (current) to Peacock’s executive producer of development where she helped develop and pitch programs that landed on Discovery ID and NBC. She’s produced Emmy-award winning documentaries\, helped streaming companies develop\, produce\, and launch content\, and consulted with local news companies to help coach talent\, producers\, and managers.
