SUMMARY:Brown Bag Luncheon | Sophia Mueller-Bryson
DESCRIPTION:Behind the Campaign: Negotiating Identity in Advertising Practice\n\nBroadly\, while extensive research has been conducted on consumer responses to advertising\, comparatively little attention has been given practitioner perspectives. Within this underexplored domain\, one area of growing interest concerns the construction of professional identities. Existing studies suggest that the industry has crafted a demographic profile of the “ideal” worker\, prioritizing certain characteristics over others. This presentation will explore research on the experiences of those who do not fit the industry’s glass slipper\, and consider the implications for employees\, organizations\, and society at large.\nThe Fall 2025 Brown Bag Lecture series feature presentations of new works by School of Communication faculty. The series will be held in Wolfson 1021\, from 12:00–1:15 p.m. Please feel free to bring your lunch. Desserts will be provided.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Luncheon | Rachel Reis Mourão
DESCRIPTION:Media and backlash movements: A Global and Holistic Research Perspective Since 2010\, backlash movements with retrograde objectives have gained global traction\, advocating for the reversal of rights and a return to prior social conditions often marked by nationalism\, xenophobia\, racism\, and anti-democratic goals. This presentation explores the role of the news media in contextualizing such movements and fostering democratic stability. I will use the cases of Brazil and the US to highlight the importance of centering research in countries with a press that has long dealt with authoritarian or semi-authoritarian regimes. The project proposes a research agenda that integrates journalism studies\, practice\, and pedagogy to better understand how media can both challenge and enable backlash movements in diverse global contexts. \nThe Fall 2025 Brown Bag Lecture series feature presentations of new works by School of Communication faculty. The series will be held in Wolfson 1021\, from 12:00–1:15 p.m. Please feel free to bring your lunch. Desserts will be provided.
