SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Nadege Green: FRIDAY (1995)
DESCRIPTION:Join Nadege Green and Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez for a *free* screening and discussion of the 1995 comedy “Friday.” \nNadege Green is a writer\, researcher\, and audio producer. She is the founder and leader of Black Miami-Dade\, an emerging online digital platform that resists the erasure of Miami-Dade’s Black past. She is also the editor of the final installment in “The Miami Trilogy\,” a three-book project exploring contemporary Miami. This final edition will center on community narratives around gun violence in Miami-Dade including essays\, poems\, photos\, and illustrations by local residents. She is also a contributor to NPR/WLRN radio. \nFRIDAY (1995) | DIRECTOR: F. Gary Gray. | RUNNING TIME: 1 HR 31 MIN | RATED R for pervasive language\, drug use\, and a brutal fight. \nIt is Friday and Craig Jones (Ice Cube\, in his first comedic role) is unemployed\, having been fired the previous day. This leads to trouble with Smokey’s (Chris Tucker’s) supplier\, Big Worm (Faizon Love)\, who now wants his money\, or his product back\, or Smokey is a dead man. Then there’s Deebo (Tommy “Tiny” Lister\, Jr.)\, the local bully\, plus Craig’s jealous\, psychotic girlfriend\, Joi (Paula Jai Parker)\, and Debbie (Nia Long)\, the neighbor Craig has a crush on. A lot can happen while lounging around your house on a Friday. \n“It’s just a typical summer day on a residential street: Kids are playing\, lawns are being watered\, there’s a lot going on but not much happening. And that’s exactly the point: co-screenwriters Ice Cube\, DJ Pooh\, and director F. Gary Gray find as much humor in well-observed detail as in the oddities of the film’s world. \n“There are slapstick gags\, bathroom humor (both figuratively and literally)\, a lot of jokes about hairstyles\, and sight gags based on ridiculous juxtapositions\, like the huge Deebo riding a little bike. All the inaction is set to a terrific\, evocative soundtrack that mixes 1960s soul and Motown classics\, Rose Royce’s “I Wanna Get Next to You” from CAR WASH\, rap from Cypress Hill and Cube\, and Dr. Dre’s hit “Keep Their Heads Ringin’.” — TV GUIDE. \nAdmission is free\, but registration is required via this link\, https://events.miami.edu/event/watching_movies_with_nadege_green_friday.

SUMMARY:Global Frontiers Screening Series: Mariupolis (2016)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second installment in a new breakthrough monthly film series at the Cosford Cinema focusing on current world issues such as migration and social inclusion\, peace and security\, aging populations\, democracy\, climate change\, and artificial intelligence. \nThe series is intended to bring two types of audiences together: Movie lovers and people who care about current events. \nEach screening will be preceded by a wide-ranging\, multi-media conversation between Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez and a special guest. \nThe series continues on Saturday\, Dec. 10\, at 5 p.m. with “Mariupolis” (2016)\, a documentary portrait of Ukrainians going about their daily lives — work\, home\, spending time with their families — while bombs\, death and destruction encroach their city. \nLithuanian documentary filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravicius\, who was killed in April 2022 while trying to leave Mariupol\, shows the city’s then-500\,000 residents\, working for the steel factory and fishing\, for leisure or food\, in between shifts. The orthodox church towers above the city and its newly built bronze domes are sitting next to it\, waiting to be donned. A tent nearby is sheltering a crying icon\, which receives a steady flow of visitors. \nThe screening will be preceded by a 25-minute discussion between Rodriguez and Dina Moulioukova\, lecturer at the University of Miami and co-editor of “Russia and the World in the Putin Era.” The conversation will focus on peace and war\, human stories in embattled countries\, and hyper-realism in cinema. The discussion will include clips from other movies exploring similar subject matter. \nWatch this video for more information\, https://vimeo.com/775806194.
