SUMMARY:Earth Day Celebration: 'A Journey Through Space and Time with Xavier Cortada'
DESCRIPTION:Miami-Dade County’s pioneer eco-artist and inaugural artist-in-residence\, Xavier Cortada\, will celebrate Earth Day 2023 at the University of Miami’s Cosford Cinema by working with his team at the Xavier Cortada Foundation to engage guests in a series of thought-provoking and solutions-oriented art projects that explore our deep interconnectedness with the rest of the planet. \nCortada will invite everyone in attendance to participate in The Underwater\, a countywide campaign that’s catalyzing action on sea level rise through elevation-driven public art installations. After receiving their personalized Elevation Marker\, participants will have the opportunity to join Cortada in the Longitudinal Installation\, a ritual aimed at building empathy and connection that he performed at both of the Earth’s poles. Inside the theater\, Cortada will provide a preview exhibition of Underwater Florida\, hand-painted Elevation Markers that he created at 54 coastal city halls to expose their vulnerability to rising seas\, and share reflections on how we can mobilize communities around the climate crisis by tapping into our own creativity. \nThe program will close with DO NOT OPEN\, a project asking the audience to write a letter to someone in 2123 that will be sealed and stored in the University of Miami’s archives for 100 years.

SUMMARY:How Women and Health NGOs Use Communications Strategically to Advocate for Gender Equality and Reproductive Health
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for “How women and health NGOs use communications strategically to advocate for gender equality and reproductive health” to mark the launch of Carolina Matos’\, Ph.D.\, book “Gender\, communications and reproductive health in international development\,” which presents the research findings of a funded Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) project. \nPanelists include Karin Wilkins\, dean of the School of Communication\, Professors Suzanne Clibsy (University of Coventry\, UK) and Rosalind Gill (City\, University of London)\, and the CEO of NGO Reprolatina\, Margarita Díaz. \nA hybrid event\, it will be attended by NGO practitioners and academics and students from across the world. \nPanel description: To this day\, women globally are subjected to forms of control over their bodies\, and their ability to exercise their reproductive rights in particular is still constrained. Amid a rise of challenges to the advancement of women’s rights\, including the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States\, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) are at the forefront of conversations about the advancement of gender equality. \nThis panel with various scholars has been set up as part of a discussion to launch Matos’ forthcoming book\, “Gender\, communications and reproductive health in international development” by the Canadian university publisher McGill Queen University Press\, which will be published in June 2023. Matos will provide a condensed examination of the research findings and core theoretical frameworks of the work\, arguing over the need to deconstruct discourses around SRHR under challenging times and concluding that NGOs need better communication strategies and practices in their advocacy communication efforts.  \nThis event will take place at the School of Communication in room 1021 and virtually. \nPlease register via the following Eventbrite links. \nEventbrite link for virtual event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/595952508997 \nEventbrite link for in-person event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/597921979737 \nZoom link for Virtual event: https://miami.zoom.us/j/95620857877?pwd=UklYUDQvR0ozSnJkc3d2bVVMWC83Zz09

SUMMARY:'Evil Dead Rise' Free Preview Screening
DESCRIPTION:Come catch a free sneak preview of “Evil Dead Rise” at the Cosford Cinema at 7:30 p.m. Monday April 10! \nEVIL DEAD RISE | 4K DCP | writer-director: Lee Cronin | RUNNING TIME: 1H 37M | RATED R for strong bloody horror violence and gore\, and some language. \nMoving the action out of the woods and into the city\, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters\, played by Sutherland and Sullivan\, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh possessing demons\, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. \nAdmission is FREE\, but registration required at link. \n“Yes\, “Evil Dead Rise” is the most “Evil Dead” movie\, from the mind-melting body horror to the outrageous creature design to the darkly comedic spring in its step. Here’s a movie that invites you to treat the decimation of a family unit by demonic forces like a big ol’ party. There is a select portion of the human population who will find that reprehensible. The rest of us freaks can just crack open the cursed book\, read the cursed words\, and enjoy the cursed ride.” — Jacob Hall\, Slashfilm.

SUMMARY:The Sight & Sound Top Ten: 'Beau Travail'
DESCRIPTION:The Cosford Cinema is proud to present a screening series of the top 10 films of the 2022 Sight & Sound Top 100 Poll: The Greatest Films of All Time. \nBEAU TRAVAIL | YEAR: 1999 | DIRECTOR: Claire Denis | 4K DCP projection | RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes | RATED: Unrated (adult themes) | In French with English subtitles \nWith her ravishingly sensual take on Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd\,” Claire Denis firmly established herself as one of the great visual tone poets of our time. Amid the azure waters and sunbaked desert landscapes of Djibouti\, a French Foreign Legion sergeant (Denis Lavant) sows the seeds of his own ruin as his obsession with a striking young recruit (Grégoire Colin) plays out to the thunderous\, operatic strains of Benjamin Britten. Denis and cinematographer Agnès Godard fold military and masculine codes of honor\, colonialism’s legacy\, destructive jealousy\, and repressed desire into shimmering\, hypnotic images that ultimately explode in one of the most startling and unforgettable endings in all of modern cinema. \nAdmission is $5 for the general public\, free to UM students with Cane Card (use code UMSTUDENT at checkout).

SUMMARY:Workshop of Feminist Methodologies in Communication and Development
DESCRIPTION:In research that aims to address issues of social change and influence policy\, can we conceive of a particular method that can further ’empower’ some of the communities that we engage with? In the current context where the use of mixed methods approach has become more popular\, can we still talk about ‘feminist research methods\,’ or a particular methodology praxis for engaging with research which aims to tackle issues of social injustice? \nThese are just some of the questions that the workshop lead by Carolina Matos\, Ph.D.\, visiting associate professor in Global Communication and senior lecturer in Media and Sociology from City\, University of London\, engages with. Funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF)\, the project\, Gender\, communications and reproductive health in international development\, made use of a mixed methods approach to examine the use of communications strategically by 52 health and feminist NGOs from both the north and the south\, from the U.S. to Europe\, Latin America\, and South Asia. \nThe workshop centers specifically on the focus groups findings with a group of women from low-income backgrounds in the state of Campinas\, Sao Paulo Brazil\, which was conducted in partnership with the NGO Reprolatina during the summer of 2021. Designed for graduate students\, Ph.D.s\, and early career researchers\, this workshop will be followed by a hands-on activity on methodology application to one’s own research\, as well as critical thinking on methodology and feminist perspectives on qualitative and quantitative research\, use of interviews\, ethnography\, and focus groups.

SUMMARY:Top Network Executive and Producer to Share Media Career Insights with Students
DESCRIPTION:It’s all about how to tell a good story. That’s the best way to describe Shannon High-Bassalik’s career which has spanned news\, entertainment\, documentaries\, streaming\, and social media. Starting as an associate news producer in Miami at WFOR\, she came back to the station exactly 10 years later as VP of news and helped bring it from one of the worst stations in the country to an award-winning national leader. \nAt the networks\, as creator and executive producer of CNN’s “Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien” and “Early Start\,” she helped increase ratings by 20% year over year. As VP and managing editor of MSNBC\, overseeing the content and programming of mornings\, daytime\, and weekends\, she built a team that increased ratings to the highest they had ever been\, and as SVP of programming for the short-lived Al Jazeera America network\, she oversaw primetime shows and documentaries\, including teams that won Primetime Emmys\, Peabodys and Duponts. \nAlways on the hunt to learn new genres\, she has worked in the entertainment industry as co-executive producer of the nationally syndicated daytime talk show “Tamron Hall” (current) to Peacock’s executive producer of development where she helped develop and pitch programs that landed on Discovery ID and NBC. She’s produced Emmy-award winning documentaries\, helped streaming companies develop\, produce\, and launch content\, and consulted with local news companies to help coach talent\, producers\, and managers. She is also a vice president of the University of Miami’s Alumni Board of Directors Executive Committee. \nJoin us in Studio C for this fantastic conversation.

SUMMARY:The Sight & Sound Top Ten: ‘In The Mood For Love’ (2000)
DESCRIPTION:The Cosford Cinema is proud to present a screening series of the top 10 films of the 2022 Sight & Sound Top 100 Poll: The Greatest Films of All Time. \nLaunched in 1952 and conducted every 10 years since\, the poll includes filmmakers\, critics\, and journalists from around the world. The results are published in “Sight & Sound\,” a monthly film magazine published by the British Film Institute. \n“IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE” | YEAR: 2000 | DIRECTOR: Wong Kar Wai | 4K DCP | RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes | RATED: PG (for adult themes) \nHong Kong\, 1962: Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and Su Li-Zhen (Maggie Cheung Man Yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite—until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. \nAt once delicately mannered and visually extravagant\, Wong Kar Wai’s “In the Mood for Love” is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping Bing\, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past two decades of cinema\, and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career. \n“In the Mood for Love” took fifth place in the Sight & Sound poll.
