SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Kareem Tabsch: 'The Birdcage' (1996)
DESCRIPTION:Join filmmaker and O Cinema co-founder Kareem Tabsch and Bill Cosford Cinema manager\, Rene Rodriguez\, for a screening of Mike Nichols 1996 comedy “The Birdcage” followed by a Q&A in-person discussion with Tabsch. \nKareem Tabsch is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker whose work focuses on documenting that which exists on the fringes of mainstream society. His feature films include “Mucho Mucho Amor” (2020) and “The Last Resort” (2018) and the short film “Dolphin Lover” (2015). \nTabsch’s work has been included at prestigious festivals like Sundance\, SXSW\, and HotDocs\, and has been featured in outlets like The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and NPR among others. \nIn 2020\, Tabsch’s film “Mucho Mucho Amor” was named one of the 20 essential Latino Films by The New York Times. It was nominated for Emmy\, GLADD\, and Imagen Awards and was named Best Latinx Film by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. He was named a ’40 under 40′ documentary filmmaker by DocNYC\, America’s largest documentary film festival. \nIn 2011\, Tabsch co-founded the long-running O Cinema non-profit arthouse theater chain with Vivian Marthell. \nTabsch is a first-generation American of Latino and Middle Eastern descent. Rush Limbaugh once said his work was contributing to the decay of American Society. \nTHE BIRDCAGE | 1996 | DIRECTOR: Mike Nichols | WITH: Robin Williams\, Nathan Lane\, Gene Hackman\, Dianne Wiest\, Hank Azaria\, Calista Flockhart | RUNNING TIME: 1 HOUR 57 MINUTES | RATED R for adult language. \nMike Nichols (“The Graduate”) directed Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in this Hollywood remake of 1978’s foreign-language hit “La Cage aux Folles\,” a comedy about an openly gay couple trying to pass off as straight in order to please the ultra-conservative parents of their son’s fiancee. Shot largely on location in South Beach. \n\n\n“Remakes don’t get much better than Mike Nichols’s “The Birdcage\,” which embraced drag shows long before they became the height of cool\, and more unsettlingly\, another casualty of the rising tide of fascism. The movie’s entire pivot point is the marriage in everything but name between Armand (the much-missed Robin Williams) and Albert (Nathan Lane)\, the former of whom is the owner of the drag club where the latter is star performer Starina. \n“Their relationship is tested when their son Val (Dan Futterman) announces his marriage to Barbara (Calista Flockhart\, in one of her first roles)\, the daughter of a Republican politician\, and Armand and Albert attempt to pass as respectable straights. The result is a satire so subversive that audiences willingly laughed at many of their most sacred cows\, including marriage\, politics\, sexism\, homophobia\, and the traditional family itself.” — Andrea Thompson\, Chicago Reader \nTickets are $10 and are available via the link. UM students use code UMSTUDENT for free admission (must show Cane Card at the door).

SUMMARY:Unveiling New Horizons In Narratives: A Digital Frontier: Dr. Hartmut Koenitz
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Dr. Koenitz\, a distinguished professor hailing from prestigious institutions including Södertörn University\, University of Amsterdam\, and Trinity College Dublin. \nNarratives play a pivotal role in recording\, communicating\, and comprehending the intricacies of human existence. As our world grows increasingly complex\, traditional narrative forms fall short of representing this reality. The widening gap between our intricate reality and the limitations of traditional discourse— often confined to newspaper articles and TV newscasts— creates a breeding ground for political extremism. What we truly need are narrative representations that embrace this complexity\, prompting a reinvention of storytelling through the transformative potential of digital media. \nInteractive digital narratives emerge as a groundbreaking response\, akin to how video games immerse individuals in compelling stories by offering competing perspectives\, choices\, displaying resulting consequences\, and allowing for repeat experiences. These narratives break barriers\, enabling audiences to actively shape their experiences. \nThis talk introduces a model to comprehend these new narratives\, drawing parallels to the interactive elements witnessed in video games. Join us as we delve into the questions of design and application\, navigating the uncharted territories of narrative evolution in the digital era.

SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Gloria Estefan: 'Young Frankenstein' (1974)
DESCRIPTION:Join the iconic music superstar Gloria Estefan and Bill Cosford Cinema manager\, Rene Rodriguez\, for a screening of Mel Brooks’ uproarious 1974 comedy “Young Frankenstein\,” followed by a Q&A in-person discussion about Estefan’s love for movies. \nEstefan is a Grammy award-winning singer\, actress\, songwriter\, author of two New York Times best-selling children’s books\, philanthropist and humanitarian. She is considered one of the world’s most recognizable and beloved performers and the most successful Latin crossover artist in music history\, per Billboard Magazine. \nHaving sold over 100 million records worldwide\, Estefan has garnered eight Grammy Awards and an Oscar nomination for her performance of the song “Music Of My Heart.” She has received an American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement\, the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song\, and was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame. \nIn 2015\, President Obama honored Emilio & Gloria Estefan with the Presidential Medal of Freedom\, the Nation’s highest civilian honor\, presented to individuals who have made meritorious contributions to the United States\, to world peace\, and cultural endeavors. In 2017\, Gloria was the first Cuban-American singer-songwriter to receive The Kennedy Center Honors. \nShe is the founder of the Gloria Estefan Foundation whose mission is to support charitable programs for disadvantaged children and empower young people through education and opportunity. The Foundation also supports spinal cord research through the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. \nIn June\, Estefan became the first Latina in history to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. \nYOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974) | d. Mel Brooks | With: Gene Wilder\, Peter Boyle\, Marty Feldman\, Madeline Kahn\, Cloris Leachman\, Gene Hackman. | Running time: 1H 46M | RATED PG \nWriter-director Mel Brooks had already enjoyed one smash hit in 1974\, “Blazing Saddles\,” when he released “Young Frankenstein” in theaters that same year. Arguably the director’s funniest and best-made film\, this affectionate spoof of the 1931 horror classic “Frankenstein” is a riotous comedy and a loving homage to the monster films of the 1930s. \n“‘Young Frankenstein’ is as funny as we expect a Mel Brooks comedy to be\, but it’s more than that: It shows artistic growth and a more sure-handed control of the material by a director who once seemed willing to do literally anything for a laugh. It’s more confident and less breathless. \n“The movie is a send-up of a style and not just of the material. It looks right\, which makes it funnier. And then\, paradoxically\, it works on a couple of levels: first as comedy\, and then as a weirdly touching story in its own right. \n“A lot of the credit for that goes to the performances of Gene Wilder\, as young Frankenstein\, and Peter Boyle as the monster. They act broadly when it’s required\, but they also contribute tremendous subtlety and control. Boyle somehow manages to be hilarious and pathetic at the same time.” — Roger Ebert \nTickets are $10 and are available via the link. SUMMARY:Earth Day Celebration: 'A Journey Through Space and Time with Xavier Cortada'
DESCRIPTION:Miami-Dade County’s pioneer eco-artist and inaugural artist-in-residence\, Xavier Cortada\, will celebrate Earth Day 2023 at the University of Miami’s Cosford Cinema by working with his team at the Xavier Cortada Foundation to engage guests in a series of thought-provoking and solutions-oriented art projects that explore our deep interconnectedness with the rest of the planet. \nCortada will invite everyone in attendance to participate in The Underwater\, a countywide campaign that’s catalyzing action on sea level rise through elevation-driven public art installations. After receiving their personalized Elevation Marker\, participants will have the opportunity to join Cortada in the Longitudinal Installation\, a ritual aimed at building empathy and connection that he performed at both of the Earth’s poles. Inside the theater\, Cortada will provide a preview exhibition of Underwater Florida\, hand-painted Elevation Markers that he created at 54 coastal city halls to expose their vulnerability to rising seas\, and share reflections on how we can mobilize communities around the climate crisis by tapping into our own creativity. \nThe program will close with DO NOT OPEN\, a project asking the audience to write a letter to someone in 2123 that will be sealed and stored in the University of Miami’s archives for 100 years.

SUMMARY:How Women and Health NGOs Use Communications Strategically to Advocate for Gender Equality and Reproductive Health
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for “How women and health NGOs use communications strategically to advocate for gender equality and reproductive health” to mark the launch of Carolina Matos’\, Ph.D.\, book “Gender\, communications and reproductive health in international development\,” which presents the research findings of a funded Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) project. \nPanelists include Karin Wilkins\, dean of the School of Communication\, Professors Suzanne Clibsy (University of Coventry\, UK) and Rosalind Gill (City\, University of London)\, and the CEO of NGO Reprolatina\, Margarita Díaz. \nA hybrid event\, it will be attended by NGO practitioners and academics and students from across the world. \nPanel description: To this day\, women globally are subjected to forms of control over their bodies\, and their ability to exercise their reproductive rights in particular is still constrained. Amid a rise of challenges to the advancement of women’s rights\, including the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States\, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) are at the forefront of conversations about the advancement of gender equality. \nThis panel with various scholars has been set up as part of a discussion to launch Matos’ forthcoming book\, “Gender\, communications and reproductive health in international development” by the Canadian university publisher McGill Queen University Press\, which will be published in June 2023. Matos will provide a condensed examination of the research findings and core theoretical frameworks of the work\, arguing over the need to deconstruct discourses around SRHR under challenging times and concluding that NGOs need better communication strategies and practices in their advocacy communication efforts.  \nThis event will take place at the School of Communication in room 1021 and virtually. \nPlease register via the following Eventbrite links. \nEventbrite link for virtual event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/595952508997 \nEventbrite link for in-person event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/597921979737 \nZoom link for Virtual event: https://miami.zoom.us/j/95620857877?pwd=UklYUDQvR0ozSnJkc3d2bVVMWC83Zz09

SUMMARY:'Evil Dead Rise' Free Preview Screening
DESCRIPTION:Come catch a free sneak preview of “Evil Dead Rise” at the Cosford Cinema at 7:30 p.m. Monday April 10! \nEVIL DEAD RISE | 4K DCP | writer-director: Lee Cronin | RUNNING TIME: 1H 37M | RATED R for strong bloody horror violence and gore\, and some language. \nMoving the action out of the woods and into the city\, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters\, played by Sutherland and Sullivan\, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh possessing demons\, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. \nAdmission is FREE\, but registration required at link. \n“Yes\, “Evil Dead Rise” is the most “Evil Dead” movie\, from the mind-melting body horror to the outrageous creature design to the darkly comedic spring in its step. Here’s a movie that invites you to treat the decimation of a family unit by demonic forces like a big ol’ party. There is a select portion of the human population who will find that reprehensible. The rest of us freaks can just crack open the cursed book\, read the cursed words\, and enjoy the cursed ride.” — Jacob Hall\, Slashfilm.

SUMMARY:The Sight & Sound Top Ten: 'Beau Travail'
DESCRIPTION:The Cosford Cinema is proud to present a screening series of the top 10 films of the 2022 Sight & Sound Top 100 Poll: The Greatest Films of All Time. \nBEAU TRAVAIL | YEAR: 1999 | DIRECTOR: Claire Denis | 4K DCP projection | RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes | RATED: Unrated (adult themes) | In French with English subtitles \nWith her ravishingly sensual take on Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd\,” Claire Denis firmly established herself as one of the great visual tone poets of our time. Amid the azure waters and sunbaked desert landscapes of Djibouti\, a French Foreign Legion sergeant (Denis Lavant) sows the seeds of his own ruin as his obsession with a striking young recruit (Grégoire Colin) plays out to the thunderous\, operatic strains of Benjamin Britten. Denis and cinematographer Agnès Godard fold military and masculine codes of honor\, colonialism’s legacy\, destructive jealousy\, and repressed desire into shimmering\, hypnotic images that ultimately explode in one of the most startling and unforgettable endings in all of modern cinema. \nAdmission is $5 for the general public\, free to UM students with Cane Card (use code UMSTUDENT at checkout).
