SUMMARY:Wolfson Foundation Speaker Series & Grand Rounds: Intuition Can Literally Save Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Arnold had an unshakable premonition: she knew she would die during childbirth. For months\, she prepared her loved ones\, medical team and anyone who would listen. The problem.. no one was—until it unfolded exactly as she predicted\, leaving everyone stunned and wondering\, “How did she know?” She recounts this harrowing experience in her international bestseller\, 37 Seconds. Before sharing her own story\, Stephanie built a distinguished career as an Emmy-nominated TV producer\, helping others bring their narratives to life over decades. Yet\, she would find the biggest story she would tell\, would be her own. Today\, she serves on the board of the Amniotic Fluid Embolism Foundation and devotes her energy to speaking and advocacy for organizations like the American Society of Anesthesiologists\, hospitals\, universities\, and even the Department of Defense. Her core message? Trust your intuition: “If you SENSE something\, SAY something”—it could save your life. Her extraordinary journey is now featured in Netflix’s Surviving Death. \nJoin via Zoom. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Luncheon | Alfred L. Martin\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:The Golden Age of Television: The Golden Girls in the 1980s and Beyond Debuting on September 14\, 1985\, the NBC series The Golden Girls\, starring Bea Arthur\, Betty White\, Rue McClannahan\, and Estelle Getty became one of the most important series of the 1980s. While The Cosby Show attracted a multicultural audience along racial and gendered lines\, The Golden Girls also captured queer viewers. Unlike series like The Cosby Show\, Family Ties\, Murder\, She Wrote\, Cheers\, 60 Minutes\, and Dynasty\, which were the first through sixth most-watched series\, The Golden Girls has endured in the popular zeitgeist and has been continuously on the air on Lifetime\, WE\, Logo\, or other channels since it stopped producing new episodes in 1992. In this talk\, Alfred Martin discusses the production of the series and the ways it captured a wide audience\, finishing its first season as the seventh most-watched television program (tied with Dynasty). But Martin also explores the ways the series endures through its fandom\, particularly among Black women and gay men. \nThe Fall 2025 Brown Bag Lecture series feature presentations of new works by School of Communication faculty. The series will be held in Wolfson 1021\, from 12:00–1:15 p.m. Please feel free to bring your lunch. Desserts will be provided.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Luncheon | Rachel Reis Mourão
DESCRIPTION:Media and backlash movements: A Global and Holistic Research Perspective Since 2010\, backlash movements with retrograde objectives have gained global traction\, advocating for the reversal of rights and a return to prior social conditions often marked by nationalism\, xenophobia\, racism\, and anti-democratic goals. This presentation explores the role of the news media in contextualizing such movements and fostering democratic stability. I will use the cases of Brazil and the US to highlight the importance of centering research in countries with a press that has long dealt with authoritarian or semi-authoritarian regimes. The project proposes a research agenda that integrates journalism studies\, practice\, and pedagogy to better understand how media can both challenge and enable backlash movements in diverse global contexts. \nThe Fall 2025 Brown Bag Lecture series feature presentations of new works by School of Communication faculty. The series will be held in Wolfson 1021\, from 12:00–1:15 p.m. Please feel free to bring your lunch. Desserts will be provided.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Luncheon | Sophia Mueller-Bryson
DESCRIPTION:Behind the Campaign: Negotiating Identity in Advertising Practice\n\nBroadly\, while extensive research has been conducted on consumer responses to advertising\, comparatively little attention has been given practitioner perspectives. Within this underexplored domain\, one area of growing interest concerns the construction of professional identities. Existing studies suggest that the industry has crafted a demographic profile of the “ideal” worker\, prioritizing certain characteristics over others. This presentation will explore research on the experiences of those who do not fit the industry’s glass slipper\, and consider the implications for employees\, organizations\, and society at large.\nThe Fall 2025 Brown Bag Lecture series feature presentations of new works by School of Communication faculty. The series will be held in Wolfson 1021\, from 12:00–1:15 p.m. Please feel free to bring your lunch. Desserts will be provided.
