SUMMARY:Unveiling New Horizons In Narratives: A Digital Frontier: Dr. Hartmut Koenitz
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Dr. Koenitz\, a distinguished professor hailing from prestigious institutions including Södertörn University\, University of Amsterdam\, and Trinity College Dublin. \nNarratives play a pivotal role in recording\, communicating\, and comprehending the intricacies of human existence. As our world grows increasingly complex\, traditional narrative forms fall short of representing this reality. The widening gap between our intricate reality and the limitations of traditional discourse— often confined to newspaper articles and TV newscasts— creates a breeding ground for political extremism. What we truly need are narrative representations that embrace this complexity\, prompting a reinvention of storytelling through the transformative potential of digital media. \nInteractive digital narratives emerge as a groundbreaking response\, akin to how video games immerse individuals in compelling stories by offering competing perspectives\, choices\, displaying resulting consequences\, and allowing for repeat experiences. These narratives break barriers\, enabling audiences to actively shape their experiences. \nThis talk introduces a model to comprehend these new narratives\, drawing parallels to the interactive elements witnessed in video games. Join us as we delve into the questions of design and application\, navigating the uncharted territories of narrative evolution in the digital era.

SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Kareem Tabsch: 'The Birdcage' (1996)
DESCRIPTION:Join filmmaker and O Cinema co-founder Kareem Tabsch and Bill Cosford Cinema manager\, Rene Rodriguez\, for a screening of Mike Nichols 1996 comedy “The Birdcage” followed by a Q&A in-person discussion with Tabsch. \nKareem Tabsch is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker whose work focuses on documenting that which exists on the fringes of mainstream society. His feature films include “Mucho Mucho Amor” (2020) and “The Last Resort” (2018) and the short film “Dolphin Lover” (2015). \nTabsch’s work has been included at prestigious festivals like Sundance\, SXSW\, and HotDocs\, and has been featured in outlets like The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and NPR among others. \nIn 2020\, Tabsch’s film “Mucho Mucho Amor” was named one of the 20 essential Latino Films by The New York Times. It was nominated for Emmy\, GLADD\, and Imagen Awards and was named Best Latinx Film by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. He was named a ’40 under 40′ documentary filmmaker by DocNYC\, America’s largest documentary film festival. \nIn 2011\, Tabsch co-founded the long-running O Cinema non-profit arthouse theater chain with Vivian Marthell. \nTabsch is a first-generation American of Latino and Middle Eastern descent. Rush Limbaugh once said his work was contributing to the decay of American Society. \nTHE BIRDCAGE | 1996 | DIRECTOR: Mike Nichols | WITH: Robin Williams\, Nathan Lane\, Gene Hackman\, Dianne Wiest\, Hank Azaria\, Calista Flockhart | RUNNING TIME: 1 HOUR 57 MINUTES | RATED R for adult language. \nMike Nichols (“The Graduate”) directed Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in this Hollywood remake of 1978’s foreign-language hit “La Cage aux Folles\,” a comedy about an openly gay couple trying to pass off as straight in order to please the ultra-conservative parents of their son’s fiancee. Shot largely on location in South Beach. \n\n\n“Remakes don’t get much better than Mike Nichols’s “The Birdcage\,” which embraced drag shows long before they became the height of cool\, and more unsettlingly\, another casualty of the rising tide of fascism. The movie’s entire pivot point is the marriage in everything but name between Armand (the much-missed Robin Williams) and Albert (Nathan Lane)\, the former of whom is the owner of the drag club where the latter is star performer Starina. \n“Their relationship is tested when their son Val (Dan Futterman) announces his marriage to Barbara (Calista Flockhart\, in one of her first roles)\, the daughter of a Republican politician\, and Armand and Albert attempt to pass as respectable straights. The result is a satire so subversive that audiences willingly laughed at many of their most sacred cows\, including marriage\, politics\, sexism\, homophobia\, and the traditional family itself.” — Andrea Thompson\, Chicago Reader \nTickets are $10 and are available via the link. UM students use code UMSTUDENT for free admission (must show Cane Card at the door).

SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Connie Ogle: 'Aliens' (1986)
DESCRIPTION:Join Miami Herald food writer Connie Ogle and Bill Cosford Cinema manager\, Rene Rodriguez for a screening of 1986’s “Aliens” followed by a Q&A discussion with Ogle. \nConnie Ogle has worked at the Miami Herald for 36 years in a variety of roles\, including books editor\, movie critic\, features writer\, and editor. She is currently the food writer for the Herald. \nALIENS | 1986 | DIRECTOR: James Cameron | WITH: Sigourney Weaver\, Michael Biehn\, Carrie Henn\, Bill Paxton\, Lance Henriksen\, Paul Reiser | RUNNING TIME: 2H 17M | RATED R for monster violence and language. \n57 years after Ellen Ripley had a close encounter with the reptilian alien creature from 1979’s “Alien\,” she is called back into action to help a group of highly trained colonial marines fight off against the sinister extraterrestrials. \nBut this time\, the aliens have taken over a space colony on the moon LV-426. When the colonial marines are called upon to search the deserted space colony\, they later find out that they are up against more than what they bargained for. \n“‘Aliens’ is absolutely\, painfully and unremittingly intense for at least its last hour. Weaver goes into battle to save her colleagues\, herself and the little girl\, and the aliens drop from the ceiling\, pop up out of the floor\, and crawl out of the ventilation shafts. (In one of the movie’s less plausible moments\, one alien even seems to know how to work the elevator buttons.) I have never seen a movie that maintains such a pitch of intensity for so long; it’s like being on some kind of hair-raising carnival ride that never stops.” – Roger Ebert \nTickets are $10 and are available via the link. SUMMARY:Freeing the Press in Guatemala
DESCRIPTION:Organizers: Reporters Without Borders\, The UM Hanley Democracy Center and the Department of Journalism and Media Management in the School of Communication \nJosé Rubén Zamora is a Guatemalan journalist\, publisher and founder of three newspapers. His work has exposed political corruption for two decades\, but he was arrested and sentenced to six years in prison for a trumped up money laundering charge. Zamora’s imprisonment is emblematic of the outgoing administration’s crackdown on press freedom\, but also an opportunity for a new president to turn over a new leaf. \nThis panel will discuss the state of press freedom in Guatemala and Latin America\, and Zamora’s case in particular. \nParticipants include José’s son José Carlos Zamora\, U.S. Rep. Norma J. Torres\, RSF USA Executive Director Clayton Weimers and UM Professors Sallie Hughes and Gregory Koger. \nDean Karin Wilkins will offer a welcome.
