His feature films include “Mucho Mucho Amor” (2020) and “The Last Resort” (2018) and the short film “Dolphin Lover” (2015). \nTabsch’s work has been included at prestigious festivals like Sundance\, SXSW\, and HotDocs\, and has been featured in outlets like The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and NPR among others. \nIn 2020\, Tabsch’s film “Mucho Mucho Amor” was named one of the 20 essential Latino Films by The New York Times. DESCRIPTION:Organizers: Reporters Without Borders\, The UM Hanley Democracy Center and the Department of Journalism and Media Management in the School of Communication \nJosé Rubén Zamora is a Guatemalan journalist\, publisher and founder of three newspapers. His work has exposed political corruption for two decades\, but he was arrested and sentenced to six years in prison for a trumped up money laundering charge. Zamora’s imprisonment is emblematic of the outgoing administration’s crackdown on press freedom\, but also an opportunity for a new president to turn over a new leaf. \nThis panel will discuss the state of press freedom in Guatemala and Latin America\, and Zamora’s case in particular. \nParticipants include José’s son José Carlos Zamora\, U.S. Rep. Norma J. Torres\, RSF USA Executive Director Clayton Weimers and UM Professors Sallie Hughes and Gregory Koger. \nDean Karin Wilkins will offer a welcome.
