DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second installment in a new breakthrough monthly film series at the Cosford Cinema focusing on current world issues such as migration and social inclusion\, peace and security\, aging populations\, democracy\, climate change\, and artificial intelligence. \nThe series is intended to bring two types of audiences together: Movie lovers and people who care about current events. \nEach screening will be preceded by a wide-ranging\, multi-media conversation between Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez and a special guest. \nThe series continues on Saturday\, Dec. 10\, at 5 p.m. with “Mariupolis” (2016)\, a documentary portrait of Ukrainians going about their daily lives — work\, home\, spending time with their families — while bombs\, death and destruction encroach their city. \nLithuanian documentary filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravicius\, who was killed in April 2022 while trying to leave Mariupol\, shows the city’s then-500\,000 residents\, working for the steel factory and fishing\, for leisure or food\, in between shifts. The orthodox church towers above the city and its newly built bronze domes are sitting next to it\, waiting to be donned. A tent nearby is sheltering a crying icon\, which receives a steady flow of visitors. \nThe screening will be preceded by a 25-minute discussion between Rodriguez and Dina Moulioukova\, lecturer at the University of Miami and co-editor of “Russia and the World in the Putin Era.” The conversation will focus on peace and war\, human stories in embattled countries\, and hyper-realism in cinema. DESCRIPTION:Please join us Tuesday\, Jan. 17\, for cafecito and conversation with journalism scholar and historian Celeste González de Bustamante\, Professor and Centennial Chair in Communication\, School of Journalism and Media\, University of Texas at Austin \nCafecito and Research Talk: How Journalists Survive Violence(s): Examining Pathways of Resistance and Resilience in Mexico. Center for Communication\, Culture and Change\, Wolfson 1021\, 10:45 am. \nAbstract: At least 17 media workers were killed in Mexico in 2022\, making last year the deadliest year on record for Mexico\, which ranks as the most dangerous country in the world for those whose profession is to inform their communities. Since 2000\, more than 165 journalists have been killed. Despite a federal law that makes it a crime to attack journalists or human rights workers\, the conditions continue to be dire. Corrupt government officials collude with organize crime groups in attempts to silence journalists\, and reporters who work on the country’s periphery are at most risk. For more than 10 years\, Drs. Celeste González de Bustamante and Jeannine E. Relly have been examining how journalists on the country’s periphery have responded to mounting pressures and continued threats. In this talk\, Dr. González de Bustamante discusses how journalists have turned to one another and to their communities to resist pressures and create their own networks of resilience. A lack of support from media owners\, the government\, and the public\, journalists have taken it upon themselves to become their own activists.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our third installment in a new breakthrough monthly film series at the Cosford Cinema focusing on current world issues such as migration and social inclusion\, peace and security\, aging populations\, democracy\, climate change\, and artificial intelligence. \nEach screening will be preceded by a wide-ranging\, multi-media conversation between Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez and a special guest. \nThe series continues on Saturday\, Feb. 4\, at 2 p.m.\, with “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet” (2020)\, a visually stunning but terrifying documentary about the crises that threaten the survival of Earth: deforestation\, global warming\, pollution\, and other issues plaguing our planet. \nThe 97-year-old Sir David Frederick Attenborough\, brother of the Oscar-winning director Richard Attenborough\, has devoted much of his adult life exploring the natural wonders of our planet and advocating for ecological causes such as reducing meat consumption and switching to renewable energy. \nHe has earned 32 honorary degrees from British universities. At least 20 species of plants and arthropods are named after him. In 2022\, he was recognized as a Champion of the Earth by the United Nations Environment Program. \nThe screening will be preceded by a 20-minute discussion between Rodriguez and Jennifer Jacquet\, visiting professor of global climate change at the University of Miami. The conversation will focus on anthropogenic climate change\, its accompanying psychological barriers and the need for social approval in generating cooperation. Critical thinking\, creativity\, negotiation\, emotional intelligence\, and love cannot be developed by machines as humans do\, yet those skills are fundamental in the construction of our future and in the design of robots. \nIn this lecture\, Alberto Levy Macedo will talk about how we are educated to be robots\, and will discuss about jobs\, ethics in AI\, and how to combine technology and humanity for a better future. \nThis event takes place at the Richter Library – 102B Learning Commons Flexible Program Space.

DESCRIPTION:Join Books & Books founder Mitchell Kaplan and Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez for a screening and Q&A discussion of Terrence Malick’s Oscar-winning 1978 drama “Days of Heaven.” \nMiami Beach native\, Mitchell Kaplan\, opened the first Books & Books in 1982 in Coral Gables\, Florida. Now with five South Florida locations\, Books & Books hosts over 400 events per year. In addition\, two of the stores are home to well-established cafes and there are Books & Books affiliated stores at the Miami International Airport\, and in Key West\, where he collaborates with the noted author Judy Blume and her husband\, George. \nAmong his honors\, Kaplan served as president of the American Booksellers Association and he received the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation. Books & Books was also Publishers Weekly’s bookstore of the year. He recently accepted an appointment to serve on the Board of the National Coalition Against Censorship. \nAs co-founder of the Miami Book Fair in 1985\, Kaplan has served as the chairperson of its Board of Directors and continues to guide the programming team at the Fair which takes place on the campus of Miami-Dade College in the heart of downtown Miami. Each year\, the Fair presents close to 500 authors over one week in November\, along with a street festival\, where bookstalls line the streets adjacent to the campus. Santos was a drag performer and capoeirista who frequented the bohemian underground of early twentieth-century Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. This screening will be followed by a conversation with Jordan Rogers\, a Ph.D. student and UGrow Communications Fellow in the English Department\, College of Arts and Sciences\, at the University of Miami.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our fourth installment in a new breakthrough monthly film series at the Cosford Cinema focusing on current world issues such as migration and social inclusion\, peace and security\, aging populations\, democracy\, climate change\, and artificial intelligence. \nThe series is intended to bring two types of audiences together: Movie lovers and people who care about current events. \nThe series continues at 5 p.m. on Sat.\, Feb. 25\, with “Endangered\,” a documentary that recounts the experiences of four journalists reporting in Mexico\, Brazil\, and the United States.The film documents a year in the lives of journalists who work in environments that challenge the freedom of the press. DESCRIPTION:It’s all about how to tell a good story. That’s the best way to describe Shannon High-Bassalik’s career which has spanned news\, entertainment\, documentaries\, streaming\, and social media. Starting as an associate news producer in Miami at WFOR\, she came back to the station exactly 10 years later as VP of news and helped bring it from one of the worst stations in the country to an award-winning national leader. \nAt the networks\, as creator and executive producer of CNN’s “Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien” and “Early Start\,” she helped increase ratings by 20% year over year. As VP and managing editor of MSNBC\, overseeing the content and programming of mornings\, daytime\, and weekends\, she built a team that increased ratings to the highest they had ever been\, and as SVP of programming for the short-lived Al Jazeera America network\, she oversaw primetime shows and documentaries\, including teams that won Primetime Emmys\, Peabodys and Duponts. \nAlways on the hunt to learn new genres\, she has worked in the entertainment industry as co-executive producer of the nationally syndicated daytime talk show “Tamron Hall” (current) to Peacock’s executive producer of development where she helped develop and pitch programs that landed on Discovery ID and NBC. She’s produced Emmy-award winning documentaries\, helped streaming companies develop\, produce\, and launch content\, and consulted with local news companies to help coach talent\, producers\, and managers.
