SUMMARY:Research in Progress Meeting with Victoria Orrego Dunleavy\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Addressing COVID-19 Misinformation and Resiliency Among Latinos Living with HIV: Formative Research Guiding the Latinos Unidos Microgame Intervention \nThe effects of mitigation strategies including shelter-in-place orders and social distancing combined with the COVID “infodemic” disseminated by media may interact synergistically to worsen already compromised mental health outcomes and medical treatment of PLWH. We propose that a microgame intervention targeting individual resilience skill building and media literacy could be mobilized to protect the mental health of Latino PLWH as well as promote HIV care during the pandemic. \nJoin Victoria Orrego Dunleavy\, Ph.D.\, associate professor\, for this engaging conversation.

SUMMARY:"BROS" Free Advance Screening
DESCRIPTION:Universal Pictures invites you to a free advance screening of the first romantic comedy from a major studio about two gay men maybe\, possibly\, probably\, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy. \nCo-written and starring Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street\, Impeachment: American Crime Story)\, directed by Nicholas Stoller (the Neighbors films\, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and produced by Judd Apatow (The King of Staten Island\, Trainwreck\, The Big Sick)\, comes a smart\, swoony and heartfelt comedy about how hard it is to find another tolerable human being to go through life with. \nThe entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast includes Luke Macfarlane (Killjoys)\, Ts Madison (The Ts Madison Experience)\, Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire)\, Guillermo Díaz (Scandal)\, Guy Branum (The Other Two) and Amanda Bearse (Married …with Children). \nAdmission is free\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Watching Movies with: Phil Lord
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Lord and Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez for a screening and discussion of the dark comedy “Harold and Maude.” \nPhil Lord is a Miami native who began his film career with “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs\,” co-directed by his creative partner Christopher Miller. Since then\, the duo directed “21 Jump Street” (2012)\, “The Lego Movie” (2014)\, “22 Jump Street” (2014) and shared the Best Animated Feature Oscar for co-producing “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018). He also produced the Oscar-nominated “The Mitchells vs the Machines” and wrote and produced TV shows such as “Brooklyn 911\,” “The Last Man on Earth\,” “Bless the Harts” and “The Afterparty\,” among many others. \nHAROLD AND MAUDE (1971) | DIRECTED BY HAL ASHBY | RUNNING TIME: 91 MINUTES | RATED PG for mild language and adult themes. \nBud Court stars as a rich young man who is obsessed with committing suicide until he meets a lively septuagenarian Holocaust survivor (Ruth Gordon) at a funeral. Critically scorned upon its original release\, the movie is now considered one of the best American films of the 1970s and is a beloved cult classic. “Harold and Maude” was shocking by the standards of 1971 Hollywood movies\, even the ones that styled themselves as adventurous or hip. But it is so ideologically and emotionally consistent\, and weaves such a gentle spell\, that we can accept the central romance as a metaphor for beleaguered political and social sentiments even as we get to know Harold and Maude as individuals and root for their happiness. It’s a romance\, a tragedy\, a satire\, a paean to eccentricity\, a philosophical statement\, and a “trip” film whose music montages seem to roll in like waves. \nTickets are $10 plus tax to the general public\, free for UM students with Cane Card (use UMSTUDENT) at checkout.

SUMMARY:Debate Team UChat - The Issue of Partisanship
DESCRIPTION:The University of Miami Debate Team welcomes all members of the UM community to our second UChat discussion of the year. SUMMARY:'Until the End of the World' Director's Cut Free Screening
DESCRIPTION:Moving Image Alliance\, in collaboration with the Bill Cosford Cinema\, presents this rare screening of the director’s cut of the sci-fi action/drama “Until the End of the World.” \nUNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD (1991) | 4K RESTORATION | DIRECTOR: Wim Wenders | RUNNING TIME: 287 minutes | RATED R for language and sensuality. \nDirector Wim Wenders’ decades-in-the-making science-fiction epic was conceived as the ultimate road movie. The film follows the restless Claire Tourneur (Solveig Dommartin) across continents as she pursues a mysterious stranger (William Hurt) possessing a device that can make the blind see and bring dream images to waking life. \nSet at the turn of the millennium in the shadow of a world-changing catastrophe\, Until The End of the World is presented at Cosford Cinema in its 287-minute director’s cut. This nearly five-hour film version is optimized for binge-watching\, takes its heroes to the ends of the earth\, and resonates with obvious and contemporary concerns. \nAdmission is FREE but registration is required at the link. \nMoving Image Alliance is a Knight Foundation-invested studio project by Artist Barron Sherer. It’s a resource and service organization founded to create a climate for appreciation and production of contemporary moving image arts based on legacy (pre-digital) cinema practices and technologies. The project collaborates with and supports media artists and presenters through advocacy\, instruction\, and public performance.

SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Nadege Green: FRIDAY (1995)
DESCRIPTION:Join Nadege Green and Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez for a *free* screening and discussion of the 1995 comedy “Friday.” \nNadege Green is a writer\, researcher\, and audio producer. She is the founder and leader of Black Miami-Dade\, an emerging online digital platform that resists the erasure of Miami-Dade’s Black past. She is also the editor of the final installment in “The Miami Trilogy\,” a three-book project exploring contemporary Miami. This final edition will center on community narratives around gun violence in Miami-Dade including essays\, poems\, photos\, and illustrations by local residents. She is also a contributor to NPR/WLRN radio. \nFRIDAY (1995) | DIRECTOR: F. Gary Gray. | RUNNING TIME: 1 HR 31 MIN | RATED R for pervasive language\, drug use\, and a brutal fight. \nIt is Friday and Craig Jones (Ice Cube\, in his first comedic role) is unemployed\, having been fired the previous day. This leads to trouble with Smokey’s (Chris Tucker’s) supplier\, Big Worm (Faizon Love)\, who now wants his money\, or his product back\, or Smokey is a dead man. Then there’s Deebo (Tommy “Tiny” Lister\, Jr.)\, the local bully\, plus Craig’s jealous\, psychotic girlfriend\, Joi (Paula Jai Parker)\, and Debbie (Nia Long)\, the neighbor Craig has a crush on. A lot can happen while lounging around your house on a Friday. \n“It’s just a typical summer day on a residential street: Kids are playing\, lawns are being watered\, there’s a lot going on but not much happening. And that’s exactly the point: co-screenwriters Ice Cube\, DJ Pooh\, and director F. Gary Gray find as much humor in well-observed detail as in the oddities of the film’s world. \n“There are slapstick gags\, bathroom humor (both figuratively and literally)\, a lot of jokes about hairstyles\, and sight gags based on ridiculous juxtapositions\, like the huge Deebo riding a little bike. All the inaction is set to a terrific\, evocative soundtrack that mixes 1960s soul and Motown classics\, Rose Royce’s “I Wanna Get Next to You” from CAR WASH\, rap from Cypress Hill and Cube\, and Dr. Dre’s hit “Keep Their Heads Ringin’.” — TV GUIDE. \nAdmission is free\, but registration is required via this link\, https://events.miami.edu/event/watching_movies_with_nadege_green_friday.

SUMMARY:Global Frontiers Screening Series: Mariupolis (2016)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second installment in a new breakthrough monthly film series at the Cosford Cinema focusing on current world issues such as migration and social inclusion\, peace and security\, aging populations\, democracy\, climate change\, and artificial intelligence. \nThe series is intended to bring two types of audiences together: Movie lovers and people who care about current events. \nEach screening will be preceded by a wide-ranging\, multi-media conversation between Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez and a special guest. \nThe series continues on Saturday\, Dec. 10\, at 5 p.m. with “Mariupolis” (2016)\, a documentary portrait of Ukrainians going about their daily lives — work\, home\, spending time with their families — while bombs\, death and destruction encroach their city. \nLithuanian documentary filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravicius\, who was killed in April 2022 while trying to leave Mariupol\, shows the city’s then-500\,000 residents\, working for the steel factory and fishing\, for leisure or food\, in between shifts. The orthodox church towers above the city and its newly built bronze domes are sitting next to it\, waiting to be donned. A tent nearby is sheltering a crying icon\, which receives a steady flow of visitors. \nThe screening will be preceded by a 25-minute discussion between Rodriguez and Dina Moulioukova\, lecturer at the University of Miami and co-editor of “Russia and the World in the Putin Era.” The conversation will focus on peace and war\, human stories in embattled countries\, and hyper-realism in cinema.
