SUMMARY:Freeing the Press in Guatemala
DESCRIPTION:Organizers: Reporters Without Borders\, The UM Hanley Democracy Center and the Department of Journalism and Media Management in the School of Communication \nJosé Rubén Zamora is a Guatemalan journalist\, publisher and founder of three newspapers. His work has exposed political corruption for two decades\, but he was arrested and sentenced to six years in prison for a trumped up money laundering charge. Zamora’s imprisonment is emblematic of the outgoing administration’s crackdown on press freedom\, but also an opportunity for a new president to turn over a new leaf. \nThis panel will discuss the state of press freedom in Guatemala and Latin America\, and Zamora’s case in particular. \nParticipants include José’s son José Carlos Zamora\, U.S. Rep. Norma J. Torres\, RSF USA Executive Director Clayton Weimers and UM Professors Sallie Hughes and Gregory Koger. \nDean Karin Wilkins will offer a welcome.

SUMMARY:How Women and Health NGOs Use Communications Strategically to Advocate for Gender Equality and Reproductive Health
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for “How women and health NGOs use communications strategically to advocate for gender equality and reproductive health” to mark the launch of Carolina Matos’\, Ph.D.\, book “Gender\, communications and reproductive health in international development\,” which presents the research findings of a funded Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) project. \nPanelists include Karin Wilkins\, dean of the School of Communication\, Professors Suzanne Clibsy (University of Coventry\, UK) and Rosalind Gill (City\, University of London)\, and the CEO of NGO Reprolatina\, Margarita Díaz. \nA hybrid event\, it will be attended by NGO practitioners and academics and students from across the world. \nPanel description: To this day\, women globally are subjected to forms of control over their bodies\, and their ability to exercise their reproductive rights in particular is still constrained. Amid a rise of challenges to the advancement of women’s rights\, including the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States\, sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) are at the forefront of conversations about the advancement of gender equality. \nThis panel with various scholars has been set up as part of a discussion to launch Matos’ forthcoming book\, “Gender\, communications and reproductive health in international development” by the Canadian university publisher McGill Queen University Press\, which will be published in June 2023. Matos will provide a condensed examination of the research findings and core theoretical frameworks of the work\, arguing over the need to deconstruct discourses around SRHR under challenging times and concluding that NGOs need better communication strategies and practices in their advocacy communication efforts.  \nThis event will take place at the School of Communication in room 1021 and virtually. \nPlease register via the following Eventbrite links. \nEventbrite link for virtual event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/595952508997 \nEventbrite link for in-person event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/597921979737 \nZoom link for Virtual event: https://miami.zoom.us/j/95620857877?pwd=UklYUDQvR0ozSnJkc3d2bVVMWC83Zz09

SUMMARY:Watching Movies with Nadege Green: FRIDAY (1995)
DESCRIPTION:Join Nadege Green and Bill Cosford Cinema manager Rene Rodriguez for a *free* screening and discussion of the 1995 comedy “Friday.” \nNadege Green is a writer\, researcher\, and audio producer. She is the founder and leader of Black Miami-Dade\, an emerging online digital platform that resists the erasure of Miami-Dade’s Black past. She is also the editor of the final installment in “The Miami Trilogy\,” a three-book project exploring contemporary Miami. This final edition will center on community narratives around gun violence in Miami-Dade including essays\, poems\, photos\, and illustrations by local residents. She is also a contributor to NPR/WLRN radio. \nFRIDAY (1995) | DIRECTOR: F. Gary Gray. | RUNNING TIME: 1 HR 31 MIN | RATED R for pervasive language\, drug use\, and a brutal fight. \nIt is Friday and Craig Jones (Ice Cube\, in his first comedic role) is unemployed\, having been fired the previous day. This leads to trouble with Smokey’s (Chris Tucker’s) supplier\, Big Worm (Faizon Love)\, who now wants his money\, or his product back\, or Smokey is a dead man. Then there’s Deebo (Tommy “Tiny” Lister\, Jr.)\, the local bully\, plus Craig’s jealous\, psychotic girlfriend\, Joi (Paula Jai Parker)\, and Debbie (Nia Long)\, the neighbor Craig has a crush on. A lot can happen while lounging around your house on a Friday. \n“It’s just a typical summer day on a residential street: Kids are playing\, lawns are being watered\, there’s a lot going on but not much happening. And that’s exactly the point: co-screenwriters Ice Cube\, DJ Pooh\, and director F. Gary Gray find as much humor in well-observed detail as in the oddities of the film’s world. \n“There are slapstick gags\, bathroom humor (both figuratively and literally)\, a lot of jokes about hairstyles\, and sight gags based on ridiculous juxtapositions\, like the huge Deebo riding a little bike. All the inaction is set to a terrific\, evocative soundtrack that mixes 1960s soul and Motown classics\, Rose Royce’s “I Wanna Get Next to You” from CAR WASH\, rap from Cypress Hill and Cube\, and Dr. Dre’s hit “Keep Their Heads Ringin’.” — TV GUIDE. \nAdmission is free\, but registration is required via this link\, https://events.miami.edu/event/watching_movies_with_nadege_green_friday.
