We are so pleased to see all you ‘Canes enthusiastic for a great spring semester! If you are just joining the SoC, welcome to the family! If you are returning from the winter break, it’s great to have you back!

Media Law for Journalists & Students Workshop & Editorial Roundtable

This is a one day workshop March 14 at Fusion in Doral. Experienced lawyers lead workshops on newsgathering, source protection, libel and privacy, copyright, FOIA and more. Top journalists from The Miami Herald, Fusion, and elsewhere will give tips for working in the field, career advice and take questions. Travel, Journalism & Photography Internship Seminars in Cuba

Journalism immersion in the local Cuban lifestyle, residing in two of its most emblematic cities, UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Havana and colonial Trinidad. Acquire the latest travel journalism skills through editorial meetings, journalism workshops, photography workshops, mentoring and feedback sessions. Students produce their own travel guide to Cuba. Upon completion receive a Portfolio of Publications, a Travel Journalism and Photography Internship Certification, a Certification of Academic Credit and a Letter of Recommendation of Merit, if applicable. Tuition Fee: 3,500 Euros. Scholarships of up to 500 Euros available.


'Strangers to Peace' documentary needs your support

The SoC’s Student Agency is up and running and one of their first clients is a UM alumni, Noah DeBonis. He is currently filming a documentary about guerrilla soldiers in Colombia who are trying to reintegrate themselves back into society after the recent peace deal in Colombia. Noah is self-funding this project and has received help from the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Please support our alum and consider helping by donating to the project’s Kickstarter account.


Ibis Yearbook portraits

Portraits will be done on the second floor of the Shalala Student Center, February 20 through March 3 from10 a.m. till 6 p.m. Underclassmen can walk in for free and seniors make their appointments at www.ibisyearbook.com. Senior portraits cost $25 in cash or check and you must be in business attire.


Photography and Visual Workshop in Barcelona, Spain

Spend four weeks (June 26 – July 20) in Barcelona with Professor Virga and Professor Stano working on your photography skills as well study design and Spanish culture. Get six hours of 500-level credit. Classes are Monday-Thursday, and students have free time on weekends. A day trip to Girona is included. Byron Fellowship is available to 20-40 emerging leaders, entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and social entrepreneurs who are both making a profound difference in their own communities and keenly attuned to the challenges we share globally. During 5 days (July 30 through August 4) participants learn alongside a collection of academic teachers and active practitioners. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Chapter offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors and to college/university students who reside within the SUNCOAST REGION that includes the State of Florida, the State of Louisiana, the Mobile–Pensacola Market area and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Students MUST plan to attend or currently attend a four-year college/university with a declared major in Communications/Broadcasting with a concentration in television in the Suncoast region.

David L. Boren Scholarship/Fellowship

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Elton John’s The Cut

Elton John and YouTube are teaming up to give new filmmakers the chance to create the official music videos for three iconic songs: Rocket Man, Tiny Dancer, and Bennie and the Jets. Together with a panel of celebrated music and film industry judges, Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin will select three winners. The winners will be awarded ten thousand US dollars to support future creative projects. The University of Miami was hand-selected for this competition.
