We are so pleased to see all you ‘Canes enthusiastic for a great spring semester! If you are just joining the SoC, welcome to the family! If you are returning from the winter break, it’s great to have you back!

Debate Event needs Volunteers

The University of Miami Debate Team invites you to volunteer as a debate judge at an academic debate tournament for the middle and high school students of the Miami-Dade Urban Debate League on the UM campus on April 22. We provide training and therefore prior experience is not required.  Debates are at 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. and last 90 minutes. Documentary Film Project seeks volunteer crew

The 13th Floor, a documentary film by God’s Waiting Room Productions, is searching for students with video, sound and editing experience for up to 6 full days of filming, (late April through late May) on location within Miami Dade County, plus additional time in post-production. Full credit will appear on the film which explores the lives, past and present, of 13 individuals and couples ages 80-103. The 13th Floortargets film festivals in the U.S. and abroad. The scope of the project includes up Meals will be provided. Interaction Design and Prototyping within Uncharted Domains

Wednesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. in Shoma Hall. In this talk Tim Stutts, currently a Senior Interaction Prototyper at Magic Leap, discusses his hybrid practice in software design and prototyping, specifically on efforts linked to user interaction/experience prior to his current stealth role. Along the way we'll discuss opportunities where wire-framing might be bypassed in favor of a sketch or prototype, collaborating with engineers, quick and dirty usability testing, and evolving a prototype into a tool for the masses. ARTBA Student Transportation Video Contests

The American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), is sponsoring two student transportation video contests. The first, now in its seventh year, asks students to create a video about any aspect of transportation in the United States. The second, new this year, asks students to create a video that explores careers in the U.S. transportation design & construction industry. Winning videos receive a $500 cash prize. ARTBA’s goal is to raise awareness of the importance of transportation infrastructure, enrich student academic experience, and highlight the talents of today’s students. Glamour And Girlgaze #NEWVIEW Film Competition

To help close the gender gap in the film industry, Glamour has joined forces with Girlgaze to launch a film competition to provide young female filmmakers with the thing they most want: the chance to work. Titled #NewView, the film competition highlights how women see the world. To enter, directors must create an original short film (three to five minutes) that showcases their perspective on an issue, on their own life, or on our culture. 2017 Elgin Short Film Festival

This is a one-of-a-kind event taking place at The Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin, IL on Saturday, September 23. The ESFF has drawn film entries from around the world making this an impressive event that has entertained film lovers since 2009. We are currently inviting filmmakers to submit their short films (20 minutes in length) for competition in our festival. The submission deadline is Thursday, April 13, 5 p.m. To participate, e-mail Prof. Michel Dupagne dupagnem@miami.edu your completed application form (attached) and an electronic copy of your work by the deadline.
