AD Group
Faculty advisor: Meryl Blau
  • Affiliated with the American Advertising Federation.
  • Introduces students to the world of advertising through guest speakers and field trips to advertising agencies, the media, and suppliers in South Florida.
  • Members attend various functions held by the local professional club, the Advertising Federation of Greater Miami, and can volunteer their time at the January judging of the ADDY creative awards.

Alpha Delta Sigma

  • Alpha Delta Sigma is the American Advertising Federation's national honorary society that recognizes outstanding academic achievements by college seniors majoring in advertising across the country.
  • To be nominated, a student must be a senior and a member of the UM AAF chapter and have a minimum GPA of 3.25 in all advertising studies and all other courses.

Dean’s Student Circle Peer Mentor Program
Faculty advisor: Marisely Rojas
  • The Dean's Student Circle group functions as a liaison between students and the administration regarding the dissemination of information and events and serves as Peer Mentors to incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Future Black Communication Professionals

  • Purpose is to bring cohesion among communication students dedicated to truth and excellence in all communication professions, as well as provide a venue for professional enrichment in future communication endeavors.

Media Management Association

  • Open to all students and majors interested in Media Management careers who meet several times a semester to discuss current issues in the field of media management, network with industry professionals and learn from guest speakers with insights into the media industry.

  • UM chapter of the National Broadcasting Society.
  • NBS membership is open to any student at the University of Miami with an interest in broadcasting or Motion Picture.
  • Alpha Epsilon Rho is the broadcasting honor society within the National Broadcasting Society. Membership is gained by students who distinguish themselves through grade point average and extra-curricular work over several semesters of college.
  • NBS-AERho sponsors an annual awards banquet and ceremony to honor outstanding students in all aspects of broadcast activity.

Society for News Design

  • UM chapter of the Society for News Design.
  • The goal of the chapter is to increase interest in newspaper and magazine design on campus.
  • Photographers, artists, graphic designers, and informational graphics artists are all welcome to join.

Society of Professional Journalists
Faculty advisor: Bob Radziewicz and Andy Barton
  • A student-based branch of the national organization based in Indianapolis seeks to enhance the general professionalism of journalists.
  • Fosters ethical and professional conduct among student journalists on the UM campus through a program of monthly meetings, seminars, guest speakers and panels, and regular attendance at regional and national SPJ conventions for both student and working journalists.
  • Members are interested in a broadcast journalism, print journalism, or photo journalism career.

UFILM Studios
Faculty advisor: Ed Talavera
  • A student-run organization comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from the School of Communication's Motion Picture program and the University at large.
  • Primary mission is to promote film production at both at the university and area level.
  • Annually sponsors workshops, seminars, special film screenings, and a visiting filmmaker program.
  • Sponsors the 'Canes Film Festival, a bi-annual showcase of student-produced work.

The Hurricane

  • Student run award-winning newspaper, which has been published since 1929.
  • All students enrolled in the university are welcome to participate.
  • The paper comes out twice a week – on Mondays and Thursdays – during the fall and spring semesters.

IBIS Yearbook
Faculty advisor: Randy Stano
  • Is a branch of Quantum Entertainment, an organization based at the University of Miami.
  • Focuses on the funding and production of independent student short films.
  • Runs in-house screenwriting and production contests.
  • Hosts lectures and equipment/software tutorials at many of our bi-weekly meetings.
  • Any student at UM regardless of their year or major may become a member of the Society and work on their own or other member’s films.
  • Founded in Spring, 2008

  • UMTV is the University of Miami's Cable Television Channel, owned and operated by the School of Communication. Since 1981, UMTV has provided University of Miami students hands-on training in television production with state-of-the-art equipment as well served the Coral Gables community with local and educational programming.
  • UMTV is a place to educate, explore and learn, for students, faculty, and audiences alike. UMTV can be seen throughout the University of Miami and Coral Gables on Comcast Channel 96 through our Live Streaming feature.
