About

The New York Summer Program was created in 2008 by Professor Ellen Fleysher and will be re-launched under Dr. Maria Scott in 2017 with companies in advertising, broadcast journalism, communication, entertainment, events, journalism, public relations and more.

The New York Summer Program runs May through August and is centered in New York City, although students may intern anywhere in the region.

The School of Communication offers majors in: advertising, broadcast journalism, communication studies, film, interactive media, print journalism and public relations. The New York Summer Program is open to all SoC undergraduate and graduate students.

Students

Those students interested in participating in the New York Summer Program must be academically eligible and of sophomore standing, having completed the basic standards in their required majors. Additionally, students must apply to be part of the New York Summer Program. The application includes a resume, application and a short explanation of why this program is beneficial to his/her academic progression.

Students may enter the New York Summer Program with or without an internship already secured. Those students seeking a summer position are then “trained” and provided guidance and assistance during the application process.

The final cohort of students in the 2017 SoC New York Summer Program will receive academic credit and have an internship within the industry for at least 3 days of the work week. All students are also to attend class each week (held one day/night weekly).

Training

Students accepted into the New York Summer Program attend the following three training series prior to starting the internship:

  • Resume and Cover Letter Building: One-on-one sessions to strengthen the student’s resume and create cover letters specific to the individual company. During this time, the students are asked to begin collecting writing, design, journalism, broadcast samples of their work.
  • Interview Basics and Preparation: In this group session Dr. Scott reviews how to properly prepare for an interview and the basics of doing interviews via phone, via web (i.e. Skype, Adobe Connect, FaceTime) and in person. Dr. Scott discusses interview etiquette as well as eye contact, handshakes and more. If possible, mock interviews will also be scheduled for each student to gain additional practice.
  • Interning 101: During this group training Dr. Scott covers topics such as attire, basics of interning, behavior in and out of the office, extracurricular activities, phone professionalism, timeliness and all forms of etiquette.

Matching

The companies interested in partnering with UM provide details on their open internship positions. Each student selects his/her top companies and Dr. Scott works with the student to craft and send a resume and cover letter. The company has COMPLETE discretion on whom it selects.

Summer Programming

Summer internships may begin in 2017 anytime from Monday, May 22, to Monday, July 3, and must end prior to Monday, Aug. 14, or once the hour requirement is met. During the summer, students attend a once-weekly class (usually Wednesday evening) in which they attend field trips and interact with guest speakers from different fields within communication. Field trips and guest speakers include Conde Naste, CNN, Elvis Duran Show, the New York Yankees and more.

All students are asked to contribute to a weekly blog series posted to the SoC website and edited by Dr. Scott. The blog series is tied to students’ LinkedIn profiles and offers another platform for them to share their experience. Students in the program are provided with a schedule in advance, outlining class times and blog requirements.

Internship Details

Internships may be paid or unpaid and at least 6-8 weeks in length but can be longer. The students enrolled for UM SoC credit must complete 135 hours minimum for 3 credits (90 hours for 2 credits). Students should be gaining “real-life” skills in their field and be guided by professionals in the industry. All students must be at least registered with either the SoC or Toppel Center for credit.

The School of Communication has a strong Alumni Association with a vast network in New York City. Combined with parents of students and supporters of the program, the SoC has a number of companies excited to partner on the New York Summer Program. More partners join the program each week as the program continues to grow.
