First Summer Session
The History of British and Irish Cinema

3 credits– 6 credits optional with CMP 205

Now in its 10th successful year, this course features 2 ½ weeks of class work at the University of Miami from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily from May 16th through May 31. Students are eligible to take CMP 205, which is a film major requirement. The course meets from 1:30 to 5:00 for 2 ½ weeks from May 16 through May 31.

Program: Students will depart on Friday, June 1, for three and a half weeks in London. All students will be housed in private two and three bedroom apartments in the lovely Kensington area in the center of London. Internships: Students will commence their internship on Monday, June 3rd. The first 3 days will be used for familiarization tours of London. Internships will take place at the BBC, ITV Television, film production houses and legitimate theatres for students who are interested in both theatre and film.

Transportation is provided by American Airlines (round trip Miami/London). Students can arrange their own transportation from Miami to London if they choose to do so.

Course Credits: All film majors will receive 3 credits towards their 36 credit required film major (or 6 credits with CMP 205). All non-majors will receive 3 credits towards their Arts & Sciences elective above the 300 level and can also receive Arts & Sciences elective credit below 300 with CMP 205.

Cost Breakdown:
3 weeks abroad: $2500.00
Tuition: $2700.00
Transatlantic Flight: $1000.00 (this is optional – students can go on-line and make their own arrangements)

Cost: The breakdown of the costs is as follows: 3 credit course $2700, (an additional $2705 for those taking CMP 205). Transatlantic air transportation is approximately $1000. This cost includes the approximately $100 taxes levied on all transatlantic flights. The cost of the three and a half weeks in London includes the apartment (for either 4-6 students per apartment sharing living room and kitchen) all other transportation, including Tube (Underground and bus) passes, several pre-arranged tours and lectures will be approximately $2,500.00.

Scholarships are available to some students – ranging from $200 to $1,000 depending upon GPA and financial need. Deadlines: A non-refundable deposit of $500 is required by March 1, 2007. Please note that the course has a maximum enrollment of 12 students and in all likelihood will reach capacity by March 1 st.

Eligibility: Any student from the University of Miami or any other institution of higher learning, who has completed the Freshman year. Note: Graduate Students are eligible for CMP 507 only. The cost of tuition for Graduate Students is $3,620.00.

Second Summer Session
June 27 - August 8, 2007
6 credits– CMP 507 and CMP 594

Now in its seventh successful year, this 6 credit course features 2 ½ weeks of classwork at the University of Miami from 10 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. daily, June 27 th through July 13 th, 2007.

The second part of the course CMP 594, meets daily from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. at the University of Westminster, Harrow Campus, London, from July 15th through August 8th. The course is taught by Professor Joost Hunningher and a host of special guests from the British film industry who conduct seminars in scriptwriting, cinematography, sound and editing. The first week of the course is devoted to pre-production in which students break into groups of four and create a script through extensive research and location scouting for a digital documentary production on the British difference. During the second week, students in groups of four, with a British graduate assistant from University of Westminster, go out on location around London and its environs to shoot their projects. The third week is devoted to post-production on high-end Final Cut Pro editing components to create a final video that includes multiple sound tracks as well as state of the art visuals.

Campus: Housing: students stay in modern three bedroom apartments consisting of living room, dining room and kitchen, all fully furnished.

Cost: Cost for both courses, round trip airfare (American Airlines), 3 ½ weeks residence at University of Westminster and two daily meals is approximately $7500.00. Three and half weeks in apartments in north london, tube pass, some meals and airport transfers cost approximately cost approximately $8,000. (CMP 507: $2600 and CMP 594 $2600; airfare: $1100; room and other amenities $2000.00.) Both 507 and 594 count towards film majors’ 36 hour required cap. For all non-majors, both courses count as Arts & Sciences electives above the 300 level.
