MA Programs

Requirements for admission to graduate status for the Master of Arts degree in the School of Communication are:

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution;
  2. The School’s official application
  3. A $65.00 non-refundable application fee
  4. Official transcripts of all college work, both undergraduate and graduate
  5. Three letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation can be submitted online, by email to socgrad@miami.edu, or sent to our mailing address.
  6. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.
  7. Official TOEFL scores for international students
  8. A 500 word typed statement of academic and professional goals

Note: Admission to the graduate program does not guarantee admission to candidacy for the Master's degree, nor does it constitute an appointment to any position in the School of Communication or elsewhere within the University.

Application Deadlines:

  1. December 1st - Priority Review Deadline
  2. February 1st - Priority Deadline
  3. April 1st - Final Deadline

Applications submitted by the December 1st deadline are being given priority review. However, applications may still be submitted for all graduate programs (Ph.D. in Communication, MFA in Motion Pictures, M.A. in Communication Studies, M.A. in Print Journalism, M.A. in Television Broadcast Journalism, and M.A. in Public Relations). Assistantships may also be available following priority review.

The Master of Fine Arts in Motion Pictures degree offers flexible specialization in motion picture production (cinematography, directing, editing, sound), producing, and screenwriting. Application deadlines: February 1 (priority), April 1 (final deadline). Fall entrance only. Students who have completed their application for admission by the priority deadline of February 1 will be considered for funding. Please note: the Application For Graduate Assistantship And Fellowships must be submitted with your application. Applications received after the priority deadline will be notified of admission decision on a rolling schedule based on space availability.

International applicants must submit the following:

  1. A copy of passport.
  2. Copy of diploma with English translation for degrees earned outside of the United States.
  3. Official / original transcripts with English translation.

Requirements for admission to the Ph.D. program in the School of Communication are:

  1. A Master’s degree in communication, or in another appropriate field, is required of all applicants. The degree must be in addition to a bachelor’s degree. All degrees must be from accredited institutions
  2. The School’s official application
  3. A $65.00 non-refundable application fee
  4. Official transcripts of all college work, both undergraduate and graduate
  5. Three letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation can be submitted online, by email to socgrad@miami.edu, or sent to our mailing address.
  6. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
  7. Official TOEFL scores for international students
  8. Letter of intent – a minimum 500 word typed statement of academic and professional goals
  9. A copy of the completed master’s thesis or comparable scholarly work if no master’s thesis has been completed. If the master’s thesis is in progress, completed chapters should be submitted
  10. Current Curriculum Vitae (CV).
