Melissa Jane Barnes is dedicated to bridging the gap between education and real-world experience.
MJ (as her friends and students call her) began her professional advertising career in Miami at CP+B, one of the most widely-recognized, award-winning agencies in the industry. She worked for more than six years in account management, overseeing culture-shifting campaigns and innovative projects for iconic brands like Volkswagen, MetLife, American Express, Coke Zero, and Sprite.
In 2015, MJ started teaching at the University of Miami. Armed with real-world, agency-style techniques, she began training and empowering her students to become highly successful professionals -- no matter their field of interest.
At the University of Miami, she teaches courses in Account Management, Strategy, and Personal Branding. Additionally, she co-advised three University of Miami teams through the AAF National Student Advertising Competition. Each team brought back regional awards of note, including First Place Overall and Best Creative.
In 2016, MJ began serving as the Managing Director of Orange Umbrella, a student-run communication consultancy based out of the Koeningsberg & Nadal Interactive Media Center. In this role, she oversees students who provide real-world communication solutions and ideas for a variety of clients.
MJ received a Bachelor of Science in Advertising from Texas Tech University in 2004 and a Master of Arts in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007.
Melissa Jane attributes her success at the University of Miami to her best friend and co-professor, Captain.
