Stephen Bowles

Professor, Motion Picture

Dr. Bowles received his Ph.D. in film history and theory from Northwestern University. In addition to university teaching, he has worked as a film critic, theatre programmer and exhibitor. He is the co-founder and former assistant director of the prestigious Miami Film Festival. Dr. Bowles has authored seven books, including the acclaimed The Screenwriter’s Manual (2005) and articles on a variety of film topics. Also a screenwriter, Dr. Bowles has co-written over a dozen scripts, including two that have won major awards and one that has been independently produced. He is currently researching a book on narrative structure that explores the conventions and variations of the “three-act” and “hero” paradigms.
