Natalia Crujeiras, the director of broadcast operations at the University of Miami School of Communication and an adviser at UMTV, the University’s student-run cable TV station, is the recipient of the 2012 Robert and Christine Staub Faculty Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Effective Teaching at the University of Miami School of Communication. On Tuesday, May 15 at 4 p.m. in Wolfson Room 2055, the media crew behind this year’s Volvo Ocean Race is speaking in a panel moderated by Chris McLaughlin, the Vice President of External Affairs for Inmarsat satellite technology, at the University of Miami School of Communication. They are discussing their experiences filming the competition as well as the innovative Inmarsat satellite technology used. The student-run Miami Hurricane newspaper and Distraction magazine won an impressive number of awards at the 24th annual College News Design Contest held at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Judging took place on April 16. UM was up against talented students from 25 other colleges and universities, including Indiana University, Northwestern University, and Ball State University – some of the best journalism schools in the country. Better than the E! True Hollywood Story, one SoC student’s book about Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn is attracting much attention and winning awards. Just Being Audrey, a book by motion pictures graduate student Margaret Cardillo, recently won the 2011 Florida Book Award for Children’s Literature. Cardillo, an MFA screenwriting candidate, fell in love with Hepburn at the age of 10 when her mother introduced her to the movie Roman Holiday. Four School of Communication members were recently tapped for the Iron Arrow Honor Society — the highest honor at the University of Miami. The newest Iron Arrow members from the School of Communication are faculty member Randy Stano and students Liliana Oyarzun, Erica Steinmiller Perdomo and Amber Robertson. Founded in 1926, Iron Arrow is a highly selective honor society that annually inducts students, faculty, staff, and alumni who demonstrate character, leadership, scholarship, humility, and love of alma mater.
