Adventurous and Educational six-weeks in Spain
(Spring 2006)

Five School of Communications students, whose majors range from advertising to Visual Journalism, maximized their summer experience with an adventurous and educational six-weeks in Spain. Students toured some of Spain’s oldest and most important newspapers, and did as the locals do, eating delicious tapas, visiting museums, walking, and street shopping.

Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation Internships
(Spring 2006)

Three School of Communication students have been granted competitive, paid summer internships by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation.  While a total of 31 internships were awarded, no other university had as many students accepted into the program as UM.

Christy Gibbs will intern in publicity with Bender Helper Impact, Aida Murgia with Bender Brown Productions/Orly Adelson Production in development and Kyle Schmitz with Technicolor Sound Services in the area of competition programming.

Minority Journalism workshop for high school students Featured in the Miami Herald
(Spring 2006)

Martine Powers, 16, helped produce a newspaper on immigration issues as part of the University of Miami School of Communication’s recent minority journalism workshop for high school students (www.miami.edu/com/workshop). She will be a senior at Coral Reef Senior High when the new term begins next month.

Wal-Mart hasn’t beat Mexico City’s mercados
(Spring 2006)

MEXICO CITY—Carlos Sánchez Rodríguez, a 53-year-old shop keeper in this city’s Medellín Market, wipes the sweat from his brow with his stained apron as he weighs wrapped salami on his scale. The dim light penetrating the covered market in the middle class Colonia Roma neighborhood glints off the chrome scale as its plastic pointer shimmies and eventually goes still.  With a carefree smile, Sánchez tells his customer the meat’s weight and what she will have to pay. Will Sánchez’ business give way to the clean but dreary supermarkets challenging his centuries-old way of life?

International reporting in Mexico City
(Spring 2006)

School of Communication students are studying this summer on four continents. The stories below were written as part of a new course, International Reporting in Mexico City. Students are reporting, doing original research, and meeting with foreign and local journalists. They have met with New York Times correspondent Ginger Thompson, NPR correspondent Lourdes Garcia Navarro, Times of London correspondent James Hider, El Universal Editorial Vice President Roberto Rock, and author and journalist Marco Lara Klahr, among others.
