The University of Miami’s Communication Week presents alternative public relations careers
CORAL GABLES, FL – Make no mistake: A career in doing public relations for nonprofit organizations can be as exciting and gratifying as agency work.
That will be the message from an all-star panel coming to the University of Miami for the School of Communication’s Ninth Annual Communication Week Feb. 15-22.
Practitioners of nonprofit public relations will appear at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Studio A of the School of Communication, 5100 Brunson Dr.
They include Emily Marquez-Dulin, executive director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami; Andrea Soto, communications coordinator of Hands On Miami; Kim Tardalo of Behavioral Science Research at UM; and Iris Guzman Kolaya, director of media relations for United Way of Miami-Dade.
The panel will describe how to build partnerships with the community, conduct useful research, and understand the challenges and rewards of your work, says panel moderator Fran Sevcik, PR consultant and UM alumna.
“Doing good works and getting ahead in your own career are not mutually exclusive,” Sevcik says. “Students need to know that there are loads of nonprofits out there, and they offer a great alternative to the corporate or agency life.
“Most important, careers in nonprofit public relations make a positive impact.”
