Looking for tips on how to get ahead in the competitive media field?
CORAL GABLES, FL – The UM student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) will sponsor an informative and constructive panel during Communication Week 2008 at the University of Miami.
Members of the SPJ will describe what media outlets are looking for in employees and interns – and will be on hand afterward for individual discussion. Students are welcome to bring resumes for feedback.
Professionals on the panel will include Rick Hirsch, managing editor for multimedia at The Miami Herald; Michelle Morgante, assistant Florida bureau chief for The Associated Press; and Kathy Pellegrino, recruitment editor at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. They will appear from 12:30 to 1: 45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Studio A on the ground floor of the School of Communication, 5100 Brunson Dr.
Hirsch, Morgante and Pellegrino say they will offer straightforward advice, including what they like and dislike in a job applicant and their preferences regarding resumes, job applications and interviews.
The Society of Professional Journalists aims to improve journalism. Its nearly 10,000 members nationwide promote ethics to inspire, educate and diversify current and future journalists. SPJ is active in protecting First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and press.
This is the School of Communication’s Ninth Annual Communication Week, scheduled for Feb. 15-22. The week features exhibitions, screenings, forums, panels and other events featuring top professionals and scholars from around the world.
