Emily Marquez-Dulin will visit Ninth Annual Communication Week

CORAL GABLES, FL – Those who seek change in themselves as well as the world should consider the life and career of Emily Marquez-Dulin.

Since leaving Venezuela for the University of Miami, where she earned both her bachelor’s (1983) and master’s (1985) degrees, Marquez-Dulin has traveled a hectic road from major public relations agency work to a range of leadership positions in nonprofit organizations, to marriage and motherhood.

Now the executive director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami, Marquez-Dulin plans to share insights from that road as part of a panel on nonprofit public relations set for 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Studio A of UM’s School of Communication, 5100 Brunson Dr.

The panel is one of many events during the school’s ninth annual Communication Week Feb. 15-22, which brings in top professionals and scholars from around the country to address issues and trends in communication.

“I’ve enjoyed every single one of my jobs,” says Marquez-Dulin, “and I have great memories from each. I’ve had many different ones because I was continuing to change as an individual – and my jobs were a reflection of who I was at the time.”

Her resume includes roles with the IAC Group, Ketchum Public Relations Worldwide in Miami, the American Red Cross Blood Services (South Florida Region), Jungle Island (the former Parrot Jungle), and the Alpha-1 Foundation.

“I’m very goal-driven,” Marquez-Dulin says, “in a ‘fixer-upper’ way. When I see an organization that needs growth or change, I love taking on the challenge.”

She says she also has enjoyed the challenge of being mom to 10-year-old-son Matthew. With husband Doug, she participates as much in her son’s life as she does in her work life, attending all of his tennis matches, school plays, chess tournaments, and martial art classes – in which, she adds proudly, Matthew is a brown belt.
