Silvio Waisbord will talk to students and faculty at Communication Week
CORAL GABLES, FL – Using education to solve the world’s social ills will be the focus next week when the editor of The International Journal of Press/Politics and author of “Watchdog Journalism in South America: News, Accountability, and Democracy” visits the University of Miami for the School of Communication’s Ninth Annual Communication Week.
Silvio Waisbord, Ph.D., assistant professor at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., will speak at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Studio A of the school, 5100 Brunson Dr.
Waisbord, 39, also is the advocacy and communication advisor for the USAID-funded Africa’s Health in 2010 project. It is sponsored by the Academy for Educational Development (AED), an independent, nonprofit organization committed to solving critical social problems in the United States and throughout the world.
As senior program officer at the AED, Waisbord says he hopes to “continue and strengthen the main areas of institute interest, which include international journalism, health journalism, and new technologies in the United States and Europe.”
Communication Week Feb. 15-22 brings top professionals and scholars to campus for an array of panels, discussions, screenings, exhibits and networking events for the university community.
As part of his presentation, Waisbord will provide an inside look at writing and programming for large-scale non-profit organizations.
After receiving his Ph.D. in sociology in Argentina and Ph.D. in communication from the University of California, San Diego, Waisbord was a fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at Notre Dame University, and the Media Studies Center. Before his George Washington post, he was associate professor at Rutgers University and director of the Journalism Resources Institute.
