CORAL GABLES, FL (July 2, 2008) – High School students are getting a taste of college life through two School of Communication summer workshop programs dedicated to giving students real-world experience.

The Peace Sullivan/James Ansin High School Workshop in Journalism and New Media began on July 6. In its 24th year, the program was created for underserved teens living in South Florida’s tri-county area who have demonstrated an interest and success in journalism and new media. The students live on-campus for three weeks and visit many newspapers and media outlets around town. At the end of the session, the participants will have developed the content for a tabloid newspaper-Miami Montage, a website and broadcast material to complete the publication.
“We are truly looking forward to this summer’s workshop. This year we will focus on the upcoming elections and the presidential candidates’ campaigns. It’s always great to explore these topics through teens’ perspectives,” said Workshop Director, Yves Colon, a former reporter for the Miami Herald.
As part of the University of Miami’s Summer Scholar Programs, the School of Communication also annually hosts a Filmmaking Workshop open to high school students from all over the country. Over a three week period, instructed by School of Communication motion picture faculty members, participants write their own screenplay, learn how to use a camera and have opportunities to take roles like directors, actors, editors and producers. By the time the workshop closes on July 11, each student will have created a 3-5 minute film.
“The Summer Scholar Program in Filmmaking really gives young students a taste of what film school is all about. It also allows them to express their creativity in ways that are not always available in their high school classes, through use of professional equipment and resources,” said Associate Professor Ed Talavera, who co-teaches the program with Professor Paul Lazarus.
