CORAL GABLES, FL (Feb. 9, 2009) – Marvin Shanken, publisher of Wine Spectator and Cigar Aficionado magazines, will return to the University of Miami on Thursday, Feb. 19, for an appearance during the School of Communication’s 10th annual Communication Week.
Shanken will speak at 3:30 p.m. in Shoma Hall (Room 3053) of the school’s International Building about his adventures in publications and how they began.
“Students will be interested in Mr. Shanken since his company deals with a mixture of elements: entrepreneurship, public relations, web design content and advertising,” says Dr. Bob Hosmon, vice dean of the school and professor of public relations.
Shanken’s firm, M. Shanken Communications, publishes a number of distinguished lifestyle publications, and he has written many books on topics covered by his magazines such as wine, spirits and cigars.
“All of the aspects of what his company does relates to what the School of Communication encompasses,” adds Hosmon. “He is a major force to deal with. What is in his magazines has a wide impact.”
Shanken is also the founder of the School of Communication’s Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation. This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate communication students who are financially deserving and interested in wine, wine and health, wine and food, or hospitality. His relationship with the school is deeply rooted in scholarship and his membership in the school’s President Council, Hosmon says.
“He is not only a publisher, but also an educator who accomplishes his goal of entertaining and informing readers from around the world with each published issue,” says Hosmon.
Shanken graduated in 1965 from UM with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He later earned a master’s in business at the American University in Washington, D.C., and began a career in Wall Street specializing in real estate and investment banking before entering the world of publications.
About his inspiration for entering that world, Shanken says: “It was just a case of being associated with the products that I love.”
