CORAL GABLES, FL (Mar. 25, 2007) – The idea behind the new student magazine at the University of Miami is to offer a fun distraction from the pressures of studying, test-taking, hectic schedules, and obsessing about whether there’s a job out there upon graduation.
Hence the name: Distraction, a new magazine by the students of the University of Miami for the students at the University of Miami, was launched Monday, March 3, on the UM campus. It’s meant to be a fun, intelligent, visually stimulating publication geared at engaging students in what other students are doing and talking about.
Editor-in Chief Dani McNally says the magazine focuses on students’ lives and lifestyles, including their attitudes and the experiences that shape them.
“The magazine addresses the issues most important to UM students outside the classroom such as socializing, athletics, trends, post-college life, Greek life, global issues, and much more,” says McNally, who majors in print journalism in the School of Communication.
She and the hard-working student staff are hoping Distraction gains a loyal and large readership. The magazine’s first issue, which has a travel theme in tune with the university’s spring break March 10-14, is available in racks across campus.
Issues will be released twice a semester, and also will be available in several off-campus locations near campus that are frequented by UM students.
Added McNally: “In addition to serving as a student magazine, Distraction serves as an outlet for long-form journalism, something that is currently lacking on the UM campus.”
