FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CORAL GABLES, FL (February 25, 2008)—One of the most eagerly awaited speakers at the University of Miami’s Communication Week 2008 was Craig Dubow, chairman, president and CEO of Gannett Co., Inc., one of the largest news and information operations in the world. Dubow addressed an audience of students, faculty members, and guests at Shojaee Hall. He discussed how print, broadcast, and Internet journalism are changing and how his company has responded to the shift.
Gannett, founded in 1906, is a publicly traded media company that is the largest U.S. newspaper publisher as measured by total daily circulation. In the United States, the company publishes 85 daily newspapers, including USA TODAY, along with nearly 1,000 non-daily publications. Gannett also produces USA WEEKEND, a weekly newspaper magazine carried by about 600 newspapers.
Gannett also operates 23 U.S. television stations with a market reach of more than 20.1 million households; its Internet sites offer news and advertising customized to target audiences and integrated with its publishing operations. USA TODAY.com is one of the most popular news sites on the Web.
Dubow, who holds a degree from the University of Texas at Austin, has served Gannett in various executive capacities since 1981 and became president, chief operating officer and chairman in 2006.
With the growing popularity of internet news, media companies are embracing the importance of integrating internationally through technology. Upon his selection as CEO, Dubow noted his eagerness to aid Gannett’s transition in “our new, digital world,” as quoted on Gannett’s website.
The talk capped off the School’s Ninth Annual Communication Week, which offered an array of panels, exhibits, screenings and discussions featuring leading professionals and scholars in the communication arts.
