Known on the festival circuit for his high art mood pieces, such as DISTANT and CLIMATES, Nuri Bilge Ceylan makes his bid for a wider audience without sacrificing artistic integrity in his latest film, THREE MONKEYS.
Infused with what A.O. Scott of NEW YORK TIMES calls a combination of “deep ennui” and “erotic longing,” Ceylan’s cinema is at once visually distant and disturbingly seductive. Trained as a photographer before moving into cinema, Ceylan’s externalizes the alienation and apathy of modern life though his distant, static, and haunting images.
Evoking the three monkeys, who see, hear, and speak no evil, Ceylan’s characters attempt to play blind, deaf, and dumb to the festering problems brewing within the family unit. Following a violent hit-and-run, an ambitious politician pays his chauffer, Eyüp (Yavuz Bingol), to take the fall. When Eyüp returns from his sentence he discovers that his boss has bought more than his time: he has purchased his family. With his son and wife seduced by the politician’s wealth and charisma, Eyüp must deal with the unforeseeable consequences of his actions and the reality of accountability. This film won Ceylan the Best Director Award at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
