Master’s Program Created for Media Management

The University of Miami School of Communication has added a 34-credit Master of Science in Media Management to its existing graduate programs. The new program, which starts in fall 2018, allows students to advance their career interests in the media industry in areas such as distribution, sales, news and entertainment programming, research, and analytics.

Michel Dupagne, professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Management and faculty advisor of the Media Management Association, assisted in the creation of this program.

“There are few graduate media management programs in the country, and we hope that our new program will fill a need in South Florida, which is a major media market,” he said. “We welcome students with or without professional media experience to our program.”

The courses are split between the School of Business Administration and the School of Communication, teaching students how to apply business principles to media situations.

“Over the years, people on the business or management side of media companies have asked about graduate courses tailored to the needs of their businesses,” said Sam Terilli, chair of the Department of Journalism and Media Management. “Some of those inquiries were from people who wanted to further their own careers and others were from executives looking to improve the skills of their staff members.”

Students are required to take four courses in the School of Business Administration, such as Introduction to Strategy, Markets and Management, and Fundamentals of Economics, Accounting, and Finance. Students must also take four courses in the Department of Journalism and Media Management, including Current Issues in Media Management and Content Strategy in the Media Industry. The program also requires students to take six credits of electives within the School of Communication.

“We came up with a flexible program in conjunction with the School of Business Administration,” Terilli said. “It combines the unique subjects we teach in the context of media management with the strengths of the School of Business Administration.”

Admission requirements include three letters of recommendation, a 500-word statement, official transcripts, and GRE or GMAT scores, unless the applicant is eligible for a waiver.

The program begins every fall semester and takes one year to complete for full-time students or two years for part-time students. Classes are held on Saturdays and weekday evenings to provide flexibility for working professionals.
