Ph. D. in Communication
The Master's Program in Broadcast Journalism prepares students from many undergraduate
backgrounds to become broad-minded, forward-thinking and ethicallygrounded news
professionals. Against an academic backdrop of graduate work in communication law,
history, theory and methods, students hone their reporting and presentation skills
in our news bureau, the UMiami News Service, and produce TV newscasts on UMTV, the
School's state-of-the-art studios and cable television channel. Students learn to
construct their stories for distribution over multiple media platforms. A professional
internship is offered in the last term of the program. Students leave the program
with clip reels ready to show prospective employers.
In as little as one year, the small, highly focused program provides a solid bridge
from any undergraduate or graduate degree to a rewarding career in journalism. The
program, limited to 16 students, operates in a multimedia newsroom and television
studios under the direction of skilled professionals. Our internationally recognized
faculty is a blend of distinguished academics and veteran professionals. The faculty
includes two Knight Chairs, specializing in new media and international journalism,
and an endowed chair specializing in broadcast journalism.
